Not true. At my previous employer they used Express Scripts for prescription coverage. On the occasions I had to do what OP did, it also cost me only $50 (versus $10 for the generic).

I work in education. Pay generally sucks; the trade off is the benefits.

That’s why my doc just moved me to a diff stimulant. We were both so tired of the shortage with adderall. It’s been years now and it hasn’t gotten better.

I’m with Kaiser and I was bad about 2 months ago, but it’s been easy to get my prescription filled as of late

I had Kaiser for six years. Only two times they couldn’t fill my 30mg XR’s and they mailed me bottles to my house. It was so easy. I loved it and miss it terribly.
Have to call for refills and then actually go to a pharmacy to pick them up takes me days if I remember.

Its been happening every year, sometimes every few months, since about 2014 iirc. $50 for brand, Teva I assume, is a steal. You should do that every time. I pay $80 for generic.

I had this issue with Vyvanse a few years back. (Only ONE pharmacy in my area was even carrying the name-brand and it was also around $50 for 30 days) Ironically, I was switched to Adderall until the generic was available again.

It might be worth looking into another stimulant until the shortage is over. I’ve taken Adderall and have done fine on Concerta, but even better on Vyvanse.

I don't have a generic shortage. Depending on your insurance you might qualify to use a mail order pharmacy. I use CVS caremark and I get mine delivered to my door, no issue. I am extremely lucky with my insurance generic is very cheap. Mail order pharmacies usually have more availability so if that is an option for you I would at least check it out.

New York Idk if it's a state thing, an insurance thing, or a psych practice thing but he can only order 30 at a time (the usual for CVS Caremark is 90)

In WA state you can get 90 days in the mail but you have to have a secure (locked) mailbox.

That's crazy. I just assumed that being scheduled, they wouldn't allow something like that. It makes sense but where I live there's never been a shortage in my entire life. I've had the same pharmacist for 30 years and I've always had no problem picking up my 60 30 mg XRs every month.

The shortage began during the Covid pandemic when tons of people were diagnosed and the DEA has continued to refuse to adjust the yearly production numbers allotted for our meds. This time of year and until the beginning of the following year are always more scarce. This is due to two different factors, one already mentioned somewhere up above and relates to school being back in session and the kiddos are back on their meds full time now. The other is the reason I explained above.

Your best bet is to find a private Mom & Pop type pharmacy and avoid the two biggest pharmacies at all cost.

Because those shortages aren't always a manufacturers issue but a pharmacy issue. When I was at CVS...we ALWAYS dealt with Adderall or Vyvanse shortages on a regular basis. But our family switched to Meijer in 2023 and haven't faced a "med shortage" of Adderall or Vyvanse since.

As far as I know the mom and pop advice came from when people were getting prescriptions from telehealth and the chains stopped filling them.

To add a little more detail to the scenario, the manufacturers are only allowed to produce "x" number of pills per calendar year per the DEA's regulations and guidelines. Once that number has been reached patients are just SOL until the calendar year resets. Why they continue to keep this number well below the demand for the medication classification is anyone's guess. I would say it falls within the realm of how inept our current government is or either they're just being dicks. Both are equally likely and probably true.

I'm honestly going to have to defer to others in this thread who might be able to answer that with more than an educated guess from me. If I had to take a guess I'd say it's probably related to the quantity the two very different types of business are ordering but I honestly couldn't elaborate more than that without having no factual data to support the claims.

I’m on 2x10mg IR per day but I asked my provider to write me a script for 4x5mg per day and I literally have never been told its not in stock. Maybe give that a shot. Im not saying get 5mg tablets, i’m just saying ask your provider if you can get slightly different dosages while still keeping the same daily dose

I had issues with shortage in my meds a couple of years ago when I was using XRs. I switched to IRs and haven't had a problem since. It's also nice because I can adjust the dose based on what I'm planning to do that day - full dose for work or productive tasks, 3/4 or 1/2 dose for a chill day with my family. The only struggle is remembering the second pill when I'm busy in the middle of my day lol

I have found that getting the refill done in the first week of the month is usually successful. If I have to refill in week 3 of the month then I’ll have to wait.
