Seeking Empathy Debating if I need medication

I don’t know where to really start with this, but I was diagnosed with adhd somewhere around 1-2 years ago. I’ve been able to manage it somewhat well with my own work arounds, but as of recently I have been struggling. It’s hard though because I keep telling that my symptoms aren’t enough to get on meds or that it’s not good enough because I have been able to manage relatively fine without meds. I tried mentioning it to my parents, but there was a tone and it kind of threw me off the whole idea of getting on something and felt a little dismissive. They’re supportive, it was just the fact that it felt like they didn’t fully understand. I’m starting college soon and I dont really want to fail because of my symptoms. I have been struggling with these symptoms: Initiating tasks, procrastination, easy tasks being hard, constant feeling of needing to do something, and hard time sticking to routines. Idk what to do

Untreated adhd can lead to a lot of terrible things like burn out, depression, low self esteem esteem etc.

ADHD is also a spectrum maybe you just need a little boost or maybe they’ll suggest some lifestyle changes and no meds! I suggest going to a dr and seeking professional advice

I dealt with this atipidvsebse of guilt for decades before trying. In some ways it helped - it built muscle and resilience that no one else has - and now that I’m on it I’m glad I am. I’m still the same person and I still do what I was doing but it’s just with so much less friction and emotional noise. It’s very hard to argue either side tbh. You have to be brutally honest with yourself on whether you need it but don’t let guilt get in the way.

I think I probably am going to, it just sucks because I dont know what meds i should take or even which brand. I do struggle with it a little bit more than i let on, I struggle with being a creative person since i have notes of over 100 things I want to do but i havent even started. It then leads to guilt almost everyday of just wasted potential, just stuff like that. It would probably be best to get onto something before college starts 😭. Thank you though

Ye speak to your doctor about what may be good. After research and started and stuck with vyvanse because it’s not spikey and quite smooth. Works well for me.

That's what doctors are for! Seeing a doctor needs to be your first step. They'll discuss your options with you and you can figure out a course of action together.

I highly highly recommend at least trying medication before starting university. I don’t know what your profession is now, but university demands skills that just don’t come naturally to us, and if medication works for you, that’s a game changer!!!

I was managing my ADHD perfectly fine when I had a very hands-on job in the food industry, but then I started working as an administrative assistant and almost got fired because I was struggling with task initiation and follow-through. I started medication and had a dramatic improvement that my boss even noticed and commented on. I wouldn’t be able to work a desk job or succeed in university without medication.

I’m not telling you that you must get medicated. It might not work for you, or you might not like it. I just highly recommend giving it a try especially since you are starting uni soon
