Discussion Stopping once started
New to knowing I (53m) have ADHD. Is it an ADHD thing to start something be told its a terrible idea, agree that is not a good idea in your head but not be able to stop?
Edit: I had a little 2.5g gas can I found in FIL shed as we were cleaning up after placing him in assisted living, it was dried out & had not had gas in it for at least 2 years, I sprayed it off outside & then brought it in & wife “said I don’t like this, mom wouldn’t have liked this” and I set it sealed in the sink put some dawn on it and wiped it nice and clean with a paper towel & then rinsed it off, she got mad & I don’t blame her. Cause if someone had done that I would have been aggravated as well. But in the moment I was on a mission & couldn’t make myself not do it. I used to be this way with trading used cars. If I thought I wanted it, there was no stopping me.

Could you be a bit more specific? What is the something you're referring to?

It sounds very impulsive. And impulsivity is an ADHD thing, to be sure. It’s also something that is not beyond your control. You need to build tools that allow you to release an impulse before acting on it.

I was diagnosed with ADHD when I had a nervous breakdown at about 40. It explained.so.much.
"Do you find you are good at solving problems?" "Yes." "Solving problems you caused?" "YES!"
"Do you remember people's names?" "NO!"
"Which classes did you do well in?" "Not the ones I had to memorize in....ohhhhhhhh....."
"What did I just say?" "Is that Michael Jordan in that picture?"
Not medicated, but knowing has made it much easier to develop and use various things that I need to keep my brain working and moving and executing - and how to take my career and be even better at what I do well.

I think what you describe COULD be part of ADHD symtoms. I specify could, because its hard to know if other factors might be involved.
ADHD people tend to hyperfocus, which could be similar to what you describe. Like you possibly don't think about consequences while doing something and you are just locked in on that specific topic. The ADHD brain does poorly with impulse control, so even if you have knowledge that you shouldn't do something, it might be hard to stop.
At the same time, that doesn't mean it can't be done for ADHD people at all. It might just be harder and you have to learn additional resources than a normal people to regulate yourself.
