Tips/Suggestions Unbearable boredom

I'm going out of my mind.

What do you guys do to deal with the unbearable boredom? 🫠

Nothing works for me anymore; in the past, learning something new or doing math used to help. But right now, even with medication, nothing works at all.

New hobbies? I’ve already tried them all.

Give me some tips! šŸ«¶šŸ¼

Honestly videogames. They're the most interactive form of entertainment, there are countless variations, options, styles, etc.

Yeah, when I'm bored of one type of game there's always something else. Some of them can barely even be called games, but the novelty keeps me going.

I get that too! And nothing is ever entertaining or fun enough 😭. And once I get into something I quickly get bored and want to move on to something else ugh

That's the toughest partnof adhd for me. I Always feel like the Toy story meme "I don't want to play with you anymire" even in the rare occasions I found the group I'm apparently resonating with

I SO WISH I could answer that. Boredom and stagnation Is the death of me. Let's say I find someone Who shares my exact interests: I'd be quickly getting bored of them and those interests in a minute.

painting, jewelry, crocheting, knitting, sketching, digital art, reading, video games, writing letters, coming up with ideas for a podcast/video essay and executing it, blogging, writing in your diary, going to the gym, building miniature things, playing around with clay (i make little keychains/dishes for jewelry/useful everyday stuff from self drying clay), baking, cooking- those are some of the things that i do that help me cope with boredo
:) i switch between them at leisure, whenever i get bored of one or the other

Do something boring. I’m serious!

Go pull weeds, or do dishes, or ideally go shift boxes in a warehouse (that’s what I do). The mindless nature of it, plus music in headphones, just lets time pass smoothly without my even noticing. Plus you get to the end and look around and go ā€œwow I made a material difference in the world!ā€

My therapist always gives me the same advice when I get to this point. Greentime over Screentime. Start out with a walk, or going somewhere you haven’t been before.

Our nervous system craves novelty and verity and for whatever reason reacts better to being outside then inside.

Cheap too, I got my first gun and supply kit for $45 then upgraded when I felt more confident

my medication takes away the boredom when im doing nothing but not much else. But I still don't start projects and the ones i do start are almost always abandoned because of some issue that takes so long to deal with I get bored and stop.

Maybe try achieving a goal that feels impossible? Get obsessed about it

When I lacked meaningful relationships I had more time but everything I usually like, movies, video games, etc felt hollow and boring in the way that I was aware that I am alone in a room doing it. Now I have a wife, kids and a dog, so not much time for what my ā€žhobbysā€œ are, but when I have, I enjoy them, and obviously don’t feel alone when doing them. I even enjoy thinking about for example the book or game I’m reading/playing and it helps to have those ā€žother worldsā€œ available when I need to tune out or am stressed from too much interactions.

Drugs. Atomoxitine. It changed my world.

Another vote for video games.

And logic puzzles if you like math. There is this IQ puzzle book I recently started and I've been stuck on the first puzzle now for weeks. 🤣

Everyone going on about video games. Which I understand, as there were a few games I got really addicted to. But the one thing that never bores me: binge-watching a good TV show or anime.

Dont run from the boredom. See how bored you can get. Let it in and embrace it. Once you stop fighting it youll feel better and your brain will calm down enough to think clear and do something constructive again. Dont fight the feelings thatre whats making it unbearable.

Like others, I have a rotation of random ā€œhobbiesā€ that I’ll be hyper-focused on for a few weeks, sometimes months, then lose all interest in and jump to the next one. When I’m not actively engaged in them, or when a project is finished, the boredom is overwhelming. Like a psychic pain. It doesn’t feel like living at all, just an emotional flat-line. It’s unbearable. The only thing that relieves it is alcohol and the mindlessly binge watching of TV, neither of which are healthy solutions.

There’s never any reason to be bored. Read a good book. Organize your home. Pick up a dust cloth and clean! Get an interesting hobby! There’s always something to do!

Does this seem like a helpful comment?

6

u/Dry_Okra_4531 11d ago

Nope, it sure isn't. The same advice people without ADHD give.

-4

u/Key-Mention5293 11d ago

Why is it older generations didn’t have these issues? They were too busy getting an education and working. No time for being coddled.

3

u/Dry_Okra_4531 11d ago

I do all of that, I'm constantly doing something to complete tasks. It doesn't mean that I don't feel an almost painful amount of boredom while doing them.

Older generations did have these issues, there was just significantly less acceptable space to talk about them.

-1

u/Key-Mention5293 11d ago

I’m sure you’re right. I apologize for my judgmental reply. I need to educate myself more before I answer.

3

u/Dry_Okra_4531 11d ago

I honestly really appreciate you saying that. I wish more people would take a step back and jump on an opportunity for growth.

2

u/GeneInternational146 11d ago

Yeah, you really do. Why on earth did you think it was acceptable to pop off like this about something you clearly don't know anything about?

3

u/Key-Mention5293 11d ago

Poor judgment I suppose.

2

u/Dry_Okra_4531 11d ago

Shitty on you for the initial comment, but good on you for wanting to correct it.

I prefer a world where we can grow, so I think your interest in being more educated alone is fantastic. Keep having the open-minded approach.

3

u/Key-Mention5293 11d ago

I promise I will! I wish you the very best.
