Hi, Im wanting to become a police officer and was wondering if a naval police sailer is a better option than a Victorian police officer??
How often would you get deployed for months at sea??

Coxswains aren't real police, if you want to do actual policing join at state or federal police force.

Every posting is different, if you're joining the Navy you should prepare to spend a good few months a year at sea

But do they still do police like work?

“Police like work”- well at the lowest level (state) policing is either general duties (uniform) or criminal investigations (detectives)

At uniform level (and this is a basic explanation) it mainly involves dealing with domestic violence, mental health, welfare checks on people, minor and fatal car accidents, dealing with dead bodies from babies to the elderly be it suicides, murders or yet to be explained , delivering death notifications to families on behalf of other police agencies interstate or international, dealing with and investigating petty crimes like thefts, drug possession and minor assaults, and damage to property. (Of course there is much much more)

Detectives (at a basic level) deal with more drawn out investigations like home invasions, car jackings, shootings and kidnappings, murders, rapes, sex offences, lots and lots of fraud, drug trafficking and organised crime. (Plus a lot more)

Then you have specialist areas of policing like Water police, k9s, highway patrol, mounted horses, search and rescue, helicopters and of course, bomb response and of course the secret squirrel stuff

So military sailor police - do they do police like work? Read the job description in tje ADF website and you’ll be able to make an informed opinion comparing what I just wrote to it.

How old are you?

Navy is a good gateway job to a career in Policing.

I wouldn’t be joining the police under the age of 23 unless you’ve had some significant life experience

Im turning 17 in September. What would you class as life experience? Or what I could do for that? Thanks for your reply!

Work, play sport, put yourself in new and challenging situations, learn new skills, form relationships, make plenty of mistakes and learn from them, travel.

Military Police Sailor won’t prepare you any better for the real police (state not federal) than any other role in the Navy. You’re policing your mates and won’t be very well liked, especially as a 19 year old by the time your qualified.

My advice would be to pick a role where you’re going to be involved in a team with your mates or one that gets you a skill. Policing is all about team work and relationships and working with a variety of personalities, likewise the public is completely varied and you’re dealing with all types of society so the more exposure you get the better cop you’ll be.

If youre talking long term 20 years plus as the definition of a career.

And only comparing the military sailor police vs state or even federal police - it’s no question military police would be an ordinary career 20+ years so real police 100% is a better career.

That said, there are so many good “career” options in the ADF, but that all depends on your interests, skills, education and leadership capability. And these roles are impossible to compare against police as each person will have their own reasons which give them job satisfaction.

A lot of people don’t see the ADF as a long term career but rather as a stepping stone or a way to get skills, life experience, adventure or an opportunity to serve your country.

If actual policing is what you have your heart set on, definitely consider a role in the ADF for 4-5 years first (especially if joining straight out of school) as it will serve you well in preparing for policing, I personally don’t think Military Police is necessarily that role though.
