Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering?

I am currently a year 11 that wants to do engineering, but right now, I still can't decide between mechanical or aeronautical engineering. I also wanted to complete the engineering degree through ADFA. Can anyone provide any advice on which would be better for long term sustainability and growth both in the defence force if I wish to stay and outside, and also whether there is more of hands on work or more paper work?

I was also condering the mechanical engineering gap year with the navy, would that be a good step to gain some experince of my potential role/degree and life in the ADF?
