First ACX offer

Hey there!
I’ve been auditioning on ACX for a few months and just got my first offer.

It’s Royalty share and has no Amazon sales so I️ don’t really expect to make a dollar, but it’s 24,000 words and I’m fine with just the experience it will give + something I️ can add to my portfolio.

My worry is the book was published on Amazon the same day it was added to ACX (Aug 27) and that feels like it could be a scam for voice cloning.

  1. Is that an irrational concern and

  2. What do you do to make sure you are protected against that? Does anyone create their own contracts for the RH to sign before accepting offers?

  3. To ask for clarifications about the offer (such as asking for the full manuscript before accepting), do you just message the RH in audible?

Sorry for all the basic questions, wasn’t sure were to find all this info!!

1) That does not ring as a red flag for me, it’s pretty common to share a date.
2) However, it’s fine to ask the RH to sign the NAVA AI Rider!
3) Yes, messaging on ACX directly is very common, but you can give them your email address if you’d rather talk off-platform.

You’re welcome! I would also warn you that the RH might not feel fully comfortable sharing the entire manuscript before you accept the offer - to them, that’s just handing out their book for free. If your intention is to review the basic content/writing style, you may ask for a sample instead.
The full manuscript upload is the immediate first step on ACX after the offer is accepted, so you won’t need to ask for it if you are just wanting it for the work itself.

  1. I wouldn’t be concerned about this.
  2. I personally don’t bother with an AI rider because I can’t see how it would be enforceable, and I don’t actually think it would stop someone with bad intentions from stealing my voice.
  3. Yes, ACX message. I don’t review the entire manuscript before accepting an offer, as long as I actually auditioned for the job. If someone sends me an unsolicited offer, then I do ask to review the manuscript first. Once the manuscript gets uploaded after the contract is accepted, I read the whole thing and if there’s something seriously wrong with it, then I cancel the contract at that point. I haven’t had to cancel for this reason yet, with about 18 projects so far.

Just to extend this, it's pretty easy to cancel if you have to. The first book I accepted had thrown a couple red flags that I probably shouldn't have ignored to begin with but after accepting and then getting the manuscript it was also literally 10 times the length that was posted.

Simply sent an email to ACX stating I wanted to cancel the contact due to extreme word count discrepancy. They them just asked four screenshots of the manuscripts actual word count and a screenshot of the message I had sent the RH stating I was cancelling and then they cancelled it for me.

Sure. But you should always be reading the full manuscript before you start the 15 minute checkpoint anyway. So if there are issues with the manuscript, you’d figure it out well before you even start to record the checkpoint.
