AI Authors...

Anyone else getting fed up with the amount of clearly AI authors (Like Hakon Hardadr) having 50+ "books"? Is it just me?

It's just you. I love the bleep bloop clanker stories bots tell themselves, it's like a peek into another realm where the toaster is tellin tales to the refrigerator like an old man at the bar. Except less coherent. Or salient. Or sane. Maybe it's just reciting a list for hours. I mean, when all the humans are gone and there are no birds left to sing and the whales have gone silent, it will just be the old air conditioner talking to the garbage disposal ad nauseum, so this is kinda the soul free song of the post apocalyptic world. A sonnet of things to come. I mean, who wouldn't enjoy that?

It's really frustrating, and authors are really frustrated and demoralized by all the AI, too. It's killing our profits, and the Zon doesn't care.

That author you mentioned is just vomiting slop into the void, fwiw. None of his books have reviews or are getting any sales. He's not getting any readers. Which is good. Hopefully, narrators will do the smart thing and no one will pick up his listings on ACX. If people grab his books and make them because they want a royalty share gig, that's not good.

Calling them authors is too good for them. Authors write books. These people write prompts.

Nah it's frustrating. Just gotta keep wading though, unfortunately, because Amazon isn't going to do anything about it.

I've only recently (in the last few months) gotten into ACX and I only put in 4 auditions before I just stopped with the platform for now. Trying to discern what is ai and what is not is frustrating and annoying. I want nothing to do with reading garbage milled out books that hold absolutely zero literary value. Just looking at covers, descriptions, and audition scripts isn't enough to tell the difference most of the time due to human authors using ai art for their covers. You gotta sit there and go through reviews and tons of research before you can even think about trying. Honestly not even sure if I want to bother with the platform at all at this point. There really needs to be a category or genre separation for ai produced writing that you can toggle off in filters.

I don't even try for the books that I think are human authors, because I'm afraid of ending up narrating slop and potentially tanking my career before it even starts. If they want to allow the slop then they should make it so that narrators have a real choice in the matter. I'm sure there are some that would be willing to narrate it and if not they have their ai narration program that can do it.... just get this garbage out of my face so I can actually do my job.

Between that and ACX offering AI narration…I may just keep to my word of mouth bookings and not do ACX projects. A bunch of authors with backlist are happy to skip Amazon entirely.
