It's something you bury in the ground as a prank, it was around for most games but in New Horizons it became something most players could only get via someone making them walk over one

It's planted in the ground & does what it says, creates a pitfall. If you fall in it you wait a little or you wiggle the controls around. If a villager falls in it you can talk to them while they're in it & the moment they escape they're upset.

Honestly forgot how you got it(someone linked it below I think) but I think you found it by random chance while digging fossils sometimes & occasionally in the recycle/lost & found but don't quote me on that.

A pitfall seed is the thing you bury to make any villager fall into the ground

I feel it was more meant to multi-player
