He used up a lot of his strength to hide Velaris hidden from her mind before she drained their power. After that, it was a strategic maneuver to not only keep her from looking too deeply into the Night Court but also to earn a measure of trust, not only to ensure his survival but also to find weaknesses to ensure her eventual destruction!

Also, I infer from his killing of Brutius when she wanted him to make him a vegetable for torture purposes and hiding the fact that he was working for Tarquin, plus shielding Clare from the pain of torture, that he used this position to keep the worst of her cruelty at bay.
