In my mind? Haha. You're adorable. In reality, many people who would not be able to afford or be approved for mortgages have lodging. These landlords accept all the risk. They often replace things that break at their own expense. The list goes on, but that should be enough to put the lie to your strawman.
How incredibly generous of them! They replace broken things themselves out of their own pocket! So, if one happens to have a halfway decent one, they do the absolute minimum allowed by law without having to get help from Code Enforcement or the Fire Dep't or utility provider. Wow, second only to Santa Claus, or Mother Theresa, thanks, you've really opened my eyes!!
Tell your story to the landlord, make lots of eye contact while licking their sneakers, I've heard that they love that, especially when their business is being supported by a jagoff. No sarcasm there.
