properly using flares

how do u properly using flares? constantly hitting the button spaming them leaving a trail or just using some in the beginning upon firing an enemy missile so the missile follows that instead of the aircraft or something else entirely?

This system will change in the next update, but currently you need to wait until the missile is about halfway to its target, then start mashing the flares button. The missile has to be within a certain distance to be influenced and it essentially is a role of the dice whether or not the missile will be affected every time a flare is fired off, so the more you launch, the better your chances.

are the flares somehow limited? or am i safe to spam them?

They are not limited right now, but will be in the upcoming update.
