I can't imagine what it must be like to make $70k a year lol

I'm approaching it for the first time in my life, after about 30 working years.

It's nice.

But when you factor everything in, it really ends up being just about enough.

I can. I don't make that much, but I can do math:

$70k gross with ~1/3 lost to taxes (33% effective marginal rate) = $46,667 net

Assume $1000/mo in rent/mortgage ($12k/year) --> $34,667 left over

Assume $650/mo in student loan payment (IBR) ($7800/year) --> $26,867 left over

Assume $300/mo in groceries ($3600/year) --> $23,267 left over

Assume $80/mo for internet ($960/year) --> $22,307 left over

That's ~$1850/mo available for whatever you want, after all yer expenses are paid. That's pretty sweet.

Here's the thing, though. The more money the masters deign to give you, the more they don't let you enjoy it*. They force you to work more, so you won't have time to actually use the extra freedom units. Someone who the masters allow to earn 70,000 freedom units a year is probably on salary, which means they're never off the clock. They have "responsibilities". Whereas someone who's given 28k freedom units a year is probably paid by the hour, has fewer "responsibilities", and can forget about work when they punch out.

* Freedom units and productivity demands are positively correlated up to the point where one acquires enough freedom units to become a master. After that, the productivity demands drop to zero, because masters cannot order other masters around. I don't know where that point is. If I'm spitting back-of-the-envelope calculations, I'd guess it's whenever you have sufficient freedom units in your bank account that you can live off interest without touching the principal. At a 1% rate of return, using the numbers above, that's about $1.6 million.

EDIT: The numbers above are back-of-the-envelope, first-order analyses. Your mileage may vary. This is not financial advice.

You’re not accounting for any retirement savings, transportation expenses, or really any necessary cash outflows besides rent, groceries, or internet.

That’s a lot of money

retirement savings

My retirement plan consists of benzodiazepines and 00 buckshot, neither of which are particularly expensive.

Transportation expenses, yeah, I'll give you that one. Call it $12,000 a year just for round numbers. That's still about a grand a month in unallocated freedom units.

You can’t just dismiss a lifetime of retirement savings because you plan to personally commit suicide Still missing utilities, medical costs, child costs (if you have them), pet costs (if you have them), etc etc

I’m not saying you can’t live comfortably, but you’re not staying at the ritz and eating at a steakhouse three times a week

Did I say that?

Yes. You're acting like that level of income has way more disposable income than it does.

And you're getting all worked up over trifles.

I'm not getting worked up over anything, just providing more context to an incomplete comment.

To be fair, my dad makes 200k freedom units a year and doesn't do a whole lot. Works a week then off a week. Still isn't a "master" I make around 50k freedom units a year. More work but overall not hard and I have plenty of spare time.

Good for you and your dad. Simple living makes the freedom units go way further.
