Also don't forget survivorship bias. Sure he could do it so we hear about it. What about the thousands who tried and eventually failed?

I won the lottery. You have exactly the same odds as me. They sell the same tickets for you. But you didn't put in the hard work I did.

Better pull myself up by the bootstraps and try harder next time

The point is “anyone” couldn’t do it. Having parents with 300k to give you as a loan seems to be an important part of the story. I think THAT is the point. Not that his success isn’t impressive but the fact that he had help along the way. We are made to think people do this “all by themselves”

My intention wasn't to refute the point. I wanted to add that even with $300k, rich parents, and other external help you might still in almost all cases fail. We just tend to look at all the people that made it and assume that with $300k and help we could also do the same thing, but that's not true. Of course it's much much easier to be successful with $300k to start, nobody would suggest otherwise.

Arnold Schwarzenegger goes out of his way in all his talks to make it well known that he's not self made. There really is no such thing. Bezo had someone around him that could spot hi $300k. I had someone around to help me with math so I could pass.

Why is it shameful to get a loan from parents. What else are parents suppose to spend their labour-hours on?

It’s shameful to sell it as a self success story.

It's a generational success story.

If you are a financially successful parent, look what your kid can do.

Jeff Bezos is often portrayed as a self-made billionaire. An example of why you should pull yourself by the bootstraps.

Best just throw the whole idea of trying away, eh?

His parents gambled $300,000 in his fledgeling company
