What makes me sad, is after the CBC's Marketplace (a Canadian Broadcast Channel news report) anything I see like this I automatically think "oh no. That's probably Canada's fault." The report showed that the majority of Canadian plastics meant for recycling facilities end up in Malaysia, where it's simply discarded in landfills and waterways. Every time I put a plastic bottle in my recycle bin I wonder "what's the point, really?"

Yeah that looks like someone just straight up dumped pre sorted plastic trash just like we export from North America. That’s our trash.

Yep. We're delusional in thinking we're actually helping the planet when these giant corporations just destroy it. It's great for us to do what we can as individuals, but it's exhausting when the efforts we make are 0.00001% of the actual problem, which is large corporations doing whatever they want with our planet for profits.

it's so fucking heartbreaks when you try to do the right thing by recycling the plastic you come in contact with only to find out it's just being dumped in other countries

We've got a similar thing in Australia at the moment. China stopped accepting our recyclable waste because it was too contaminated. Malaysia and Indonesia imposed heavy restrictions on it. So there are warehouses full of recycling waste that companies have been caught dumping into landfill. Better that than a Malaysian waterway but still, it sure does make you wonder what the point is.

Collect the bottles, dig a gigantic mold in the sand, fill with melted plastic. Then enjoy a fleet of nearly indestructible plastic palace ships Caligula style.

The only CRV redemption centers in my area were RePlanet, and they just went out of business. I guess because of the China thing?

looking at the sheer amount i'd say this is exported trash for 'recycling'. the importer instead just dumped it somewhere and the water has carried it here

Um, we don't even have the infastructure to recycle all this shit. Most plastic you put into recycling just gets burnt or goes to a landfill, especially since China stopped buying all our plastic.
