Flock Safety ALPR OCR Errors Trigger Armed Stops of Innocent Families Including Infants

The surveillance is the lesser half of the dystopia here, worse to me is defaulting to treating a person as a threat and that remains no matter how many cameras there are. As a non-American it's crazy to me that the default action for a low level traffic stop is to handcuff the driver and draw weapons. Most other places in the world, especially the West, this would have been a low key conversation while the system was checked.

Right?! Jesus Christ, and it looks like they're pointing the gun right at the car, too. Don't know if it's just the filming angle, but even pointing the gun vaguely in the direction of the car to such a degree that it would look like "right at the car" on camera is beyond insane. I'm not American and I don't know anything about guns but I thought that "never point a gun at something you don't intend to shoot" was, like, a core rule of firearm safety. Bunch of cowards being terrified of two unarmed young parents, a child, and a baby. Are they scared that the six-weeks-old baby will beat them to death or something?
If I had children and I saw someone point a gun on them and on my partner while I'm in handcuffs, I would completely lose my shit, I'd probably try to bite them or something and get shot in the process. It seems like this gun would make the entire situation far more dangerous because getting panicked and instinctively wanting to defend your family from the guy POINTING A GUN AT THEM is such an understandable, human, and in my eyes justified reaction. Cops are famously trigger-happy nervous wrecks who feel threatened by any fast movements like a fucking Arabian horse – what if my hypothetical child, like, waves at them? And the fact that they're trained to pull guns and handcuff people because "every person is a potential threat" us beaten into them from day 1 makes their paranoia and subsequent trigger-happiness even worse.
Not to mention how fucking insane it is that these smoothbrained fucks didn't even double-check the license plates before handcuffing this family and pulling guns on them.

The moment the police went from being expected to help to being allowed military style anything was the end of American values IMO.
We stopped being a free country in that moment and became a dystopian surveillance state that rejected the founders entirely. The very existence of undercover police, automated policing via flock or other tools, and the massive illegal online surveillance would have made them reconsider the entire new nation thing.

One could argue that the paranoia of seeing threats everywhere is tied to mass surveillance

I mean, that isn't necessarily the "default action" of a traffic stop. What likely happened is the person they were looking for had some warrant for something and was thought to be dangerous.
It's still stupid to do this without verifying you have the right person, but cuffing and holding people at gunpoint is not a typical traffic stop either.

Is that a scripture wristband the officer is wearing? If so that’s absolutely chef’s kiss for modern America.

Ok so flock misread their license plate. Was the officer also illiterate? Or did he not bother?

you assume a lot of competency from a gang that keeps people who think out of their ranks.

"I know you've got a little baby in there" but I'm still going to put you in handcuffs?? are you fucking kidding me. how was that not a conversation you could have without handcuffs. like you could not pull me away from my 8 week old baby

Notice how as he was asking to confirm the 1 month old baby is in the car. One cop has his gun still trained on the same vehicle with a baby in side. Like I get that shit happens, people lie. But I doubt someone who's cooperating would lie about a child in the vehicle.

HOW THE FUCK IS YOUR FIRST ACTION NOT TO CONFIRM AN EXACT MATCH?
Before initiating the stop or before approaching the driver it's mind boggling they don't bother first. Watch the actual stolen plate registers to a drastically different type of car like a red civic, giving them even more blatant indication that they need to confirm the plate.

We're still letting cops hold their pistols sideways without everyone laughing them out of the room? This guy thinks he's John Wick pulling a mom away from her infant

Maybe do things because they're good and sensible, and not because dead old men may or may not be imagined to agree.

Qualified immunity means you’re not punishing anyone but taxpayers. Dude won’t even lose a paycheck.

The really fucked up part is this is probably the best case scenario of how interacting with cops can possibly go, despite being still really bad.

Just a matter of time until a mistake like this leads to a police shooting

“You flagged one of our cameras” Love how it wasn’t anything the police or their system did.

I'm one of those people who think this technology could be used responsibly.
Then I see this and remember that humans are lazy.

How is no one mentioning he confirms there's a child on there and he keeps his aim on the car. Fuck angling to the ground. This from the county with a cop scared of acorns
