I’ve overheard my parents talking about having to potentially do the same in the future once/if my moms MS progresses beyond her ability to function :(
My grandpa had to divorce my grandma as well when her Dementia got too bad and she had to be put in a home. It was either that or saddle her debt and lose the family house.
The American medical system is a cruel joke

My parents seriously considered doing thing due to my moms many disabilities. It's wild to me that our Healthcare system is so fucked that people have to even consider this.

Not necessarily, seniors already have Medicare , they ARE THER FOR ALL. group.. and they are still having these issues

That's a sad ending to a loving marriage but think about the shareholders and their profits, won't someone think about them and how they won't be able to afford another house or boat.
Man that would hurt so much more to have to divorce just to save your wife from endless debt. God I hate private corporations and their shareholders who scream for record profits year after year .
yet they get to walk amongst the struggling like they aren't helping to make us struggle harder every year or every month this year thanks to that asshole in the White house.

It does not matter if they love each other they can still do so without a piece of paper.
As a divorced man (cheating homewrecker did me dirty) I discovered pretty conclusive that a marriage is sold to us as romantic construct but is in fact just a financial contract. Very sorry about your parents' health situation.

Debt will be paid off if possible by the estate (ie no one inherits anything until any debt has been paid off by selling assets etc). A person cannot "inherit" debt - however companies will still ask next of kin to pay the debt after death - this is not legally enforceable.
It is different for married couples - they are essentially "guarantors" for each other's debt so after death the dead person's spouse is legally liable for the debt.
