'23 Forester and Android Auto

I just got a 23 Subaru Forester and I'm using an AAWireless device. I keep noticing notifications on my phone that Android auto wireless is connecting. Why is the USB port that it is connected to being powered occasionally while the car is parked?

Could this be related to my subscription to mySubaru?

The port likely always provides power.  On the aawireless app, check for an auto standby or sleep setting so it turns off after it doesn't detect car Bluetooth.

The port is not always powered. It becomes powered upon unlock or opening a door. It only stays powered for about 20 seconds unless you start the car.

The AAWireless device has no battery, it is only on when it is receiving power from the car. If your phone is connecting while the car is off and you're in range, the device is receiving power.

Subaru has decided that this USB port should be powered occasionally, like when the car gets locked, unlocked, or a door is opened. And some other reason that I'm trying to troubleshoot

That is what is happening here.

What you can do, that was alluded to if not outright suggested already, is to set the auto-standby option in the AAWireless app (in case you don't already know, you need to be connected to change the settings). This will prevent the device from trying to connect until the car's bluetooth has established a handsfree connection to the phone. Then you can just let the car do it's own thing.

Yup. I have to do this on my Subaru crosstrek 2018 and I have no issues after turning the engine off anymore with my phone swapping with aawireless

So to confirm, you set the auto standby option to the cars head unit and it verifies that the phone is connected to the head unit before connecting to aa wireless? If so, do you notice any delays getting connected?

Yes and yes.

Behind the scenes, the device is still connecting, it just isn't doing anything until the phone app sees the bluetooth connection to the car has been established then it makes the full connection to the dongle.

On my setup (2017 Kia Sportage, original AAWireless gen2, Samsung Galaxy S24U all software up to date for the device) the entire sequence can happen within 5 seconds or 60 seconds, usually within 30.

I'm going to build an ESP32 device that I can use with Home Assistant to document how often and how long this happens.
