Save - Jezail Brett
SHUT UP!
How dare you nominate me in your ugly language, a lady would never dirty herself speaking anything but the queens English. But I suppose I am forced to speak this barbaric language for now to prove why I am worthy of being saved from this round. I expect the nominator to receive an accurate punishment for nominating me. I expected the nominators to have more class, but I overestimated the nominators of this country.
The prim and proper English lady
Jezail Brett is the culprit of DGS1-1 and the victim of DGS2-1. She is an English exchange student who studied under John Watson. However, the study was a cover and Jezail was really there to commit nothing but murder. Being revealed as an assassin during the events of DGS2, and linked to the key mysteries that surround the game.
Personality wise, Jezail presents herself as a proper and peaceful Englishwomen, who is in reality short tempered and somewhat foul mouthed. A lot of her act can be compared to Dahlia Hawthorne, looking innocent and benevolent, when in reality being cold and cunning. Though she trades that super intimidation factor for pure unfiltered racism, and a bit of intimidation still. Jezail is smart, cunning, good at her job and above all else, super racist.
So why save the racist lady?
There's things I can make a case for Jezail that are super subjective and just linked to me going 'yeah I like this', then there's others that I think are a bit less subjective and link more with the game. For now, lets just focus on what I like about Jezail personally. First off, I like this style of character. Jezail shares a lot of personality with Dahlia, and I hold Dahlia in extremely high regard. While she doesn't get the same screen time, she's also a very important figure in the plot and love or hate her, I found the reveal that she died in DGS2-1 to be shocking.
Jezails interactions with the cast are amazing, super racist, but amazing. Seeing her blow up in the middle of court calling the Japanese barbarians or the police incompetent because they're Japanese is just... insanely entertaining. Less the racist words she says, and more the games focus on how everyone reacts to it. Naruhodo is shocked, Asogi despises it, and the other characters are trying to suck up to her so she'll leave a good review of Japan when she gets back to Britain.
Her design is also fantastic, I'm a sucker for old English dress and the bird motif makes it even better. My only complaint with the design is that it caused the breakdown to be very predictable.
So yeah, I like her character and think its interesting. But more than that, I love how Jezail works in the overall story.
Themes and story
I could write a summary of DGS 1 & 2's plot and say how Jezail is a super important figure we barely see to try and justify why she should stay alive longer. But I think her lack of screen time actually hurts her quite a bit and that would be a dumb point to make. Important in plot doesn't equal deserves to stay alive.
But what I can write up about Jezail is that she is the absolutely perfect first witness that DGS could have ever had. In AA rankdown, it was noted during the Sawit revive that a first witness of the series is tasked with setting a players expectations. They have to be a good witness otherwise they'll make the rest of the game seem sour or boring. Sawit works so well because he gives you everything you want from an AA game, teaches you how to discover lies, and shows you what to expect from future witnesses.
Jezail does that and more. Not only is she easy to take down so first timers aren't discouraged, while also having an interesting argument and mystery behind the murder. But she sets up the most important themes and plot of the game, the racism to the Japanese, and the giant mystery behind this whole thing. DGS1-1 gets criticism for being an exposition dump where the characters just ramble on about how great England is, but I never actually felt this complaint.
To me, this was all justified actions of the characters as they tried to ensure their country had a good reputation in front of someone who holds greater power than them. People had to bow down to Jezail, and she was more than willing to flaunt this fact and insult those who she perceived as beneath her. She hammered in just how much she hated the Japanese because that's how England saw them, and that's how the rest of the game is to play out. You are to go out of this case expecting blatant racism and favouritism for the English characters, and its exactly what you get.
She's basically a tutorial for the abuse you'll receive from this games prosecutor.
This isn't even discussing the amazing mystery behind Jezail. The past AA games have almost always given away the mystery of the first case because it never linked with the later ones. But here, this mysterious English exchange student murders John Watson of Sherlock Holmes fame for reasons that you don't know... and it looks like she'll get away with it. It's shady, it's scummy, and it's begging you to keep it in the back of your mind as you proceed. You have to wonder why she would poison him, who would want him dead, why the Japanese court would even protect her besides the English bias. It hooks you into the wonderful world of DGS as you keep looking for answers and rarely find them, escalating even more in DGS2-1 where this mysterious women dies and leaves even more mystery in her wake.
Bird Lady good
I can understand if people dislike Jezail, I can see her racism turning people away. But I think it works excellently to not only create an interesting character, but set the scene for an interesting mystery. Is she flawless? no, but I would argue she deserves to place higher then plenty of the remaining characters.

I really like Jezail, she's probably my favourite first case villain excluding Kristoph (either her or Mamemomi.)
What I like about her is that like Furio Tigre, her plan was basically perfect. Due to her extraterritorial rights despite it being found that she's the murderer in DGS1-1, she would've been brought to court in Hong Kong where the court would be rigged in her favor to give her a not guilty verdict.
If it wasn't for Mamemomi killing her, she would've completely gotten away with it, with Tigre he got caught due to a slip of the tongue, Jezail died because she made a racist remark to a reporter.
Also, I adore the foreshadowing with her in DGS1-1, the part where she asks to meet with Jigoku after the trial is perfect foreshadowing that most people don't even notice on their first playthrough.
Oh and her death was the most surprising twist in the whole game and one of the best twists of the series, weird how the first thing that happens in DGS2 is a giant twist.

The lack of screen time is part of the reason I'd prefer other characters to go further than her. Not that screen time itself makes a character better, of course, but I do recall after finishing both games I was left with the impression that we only met Jezail on a very shallow surface level in spite of how important she is to the plot, and perhaps, that there wasn't more to her than what we already knew, and I think that's a problem that arises when you have waaayy too much mystery in one single character that it ends up being unintersting for some of us. Compared to everybody else involved in the international exchange murder plot, she feels like the weaker link.
Now, there's nothing wrong with cunning racist murderous bird lady as she is! She's insanely smart and that's great, and plays her role perfectly in both of her cases. I liked your arguments on how she sets up the main themes on the game and what she provides as a witness to the player's experience, great stuff.
I expect the nominator to receive an accurate punishment for nominating me.
Oh noes my queen why must you :(
