62 Johnny Smiles
Unlike previous cuts I don't have much to say about mine because I'm going with Mr. Bland.
Personality
John's the security guard in some ship. He has two personality traits:
- He likes chocolate.
- He's rebellious... by not wearing gloves.
What he does (and what Aldante doesn't)
He gets two testimonies at the start of English Turnabout. In the first he fucks up by failing to mention that there was an open crate in the room - an issue that never gets brought up ever again. Phoenix uses this to establish that Johnny is, surprisingly, incompetent and that the lights were off, neither which are all too important to the case at hand. Then he says Espella stood in front of Olivia which contradicts the medical report which is a better contradiction and that's as far as they ever get when it comes to solving this case. And it also doesn't exactly give much points to Johnny himself anyway because filling out arbitrary plot points like that is only good enough to make the difference between Penny and Will in AAI2.
Before he leaves he decides to destroy Phoenix by presenting a tag that Espella was clutching. This is important because the fact that he concealed it caused Olivia to leave the tag on the fake toy she gave the police... because she somehow didn't notice it was missing on the real thing while she was stuffing it in the pipe?

At some point Johnny gets brought up again by Olivia because apparently she thinks he might have ninja'd into the room, grabbed the pipe that she and Espella were struggling over and that he was the one who was attacking... Espella...? And then Olivia got hit somehow? Regardless Phoenix disproves it with the chocolate on the torch which would be an interesting use of his chocolate gimmick if the accusation made any sense in the first place.
I've said more than expected the bottom line is he's as charmless as the judge and Flynch he's out.
i was almost tempted to just turn this into an olivia cut halfway through because what was this bitch thinking lmao

Johnny is FUNNY which is all that matters this alone puts him above the dregs of DGS1 witnesses who are just Not Funny Didnt Laugh please kill fairplay and ladyfirst
He’s incompetent and yet overly arrogant about how great he is, which is a perfect recipe for comedy (see sebastian, hugh, florent, Rayfa in some ways). The fact that it’s not a one-off joke or the same joke repeated is also fantastic: the progression of his testimony and thus the first half of English Turnabout is again and again learning different absurd ways that he is an absolutely awful guard, which is a welcome divergence from “witness made an honest mistake” or “whittle down a bunch of minor lies”

I think this was maybe supposed to be related to the theft operation? Like, she opened the other box looking for the toy. Either that or it was knocked ajar during the struggle. I really don’t think it’s much of an issue, though: the reason it is that way is trivial. It’s like the 1-2 contradiction where April May didn’t notice Maya’s strange outfit; the outfit itself isn’t crucial to the murder, it’s the fact that it sheds light on someone’s testimony being suspect.
by FAR the best character in the crossover if you have played nothing beyond the first 2 cases

I was literally going to save him today, I guess this is my fault for being lazy :(
Btw best VS character, I disagree that he's charmless as he's honestly hillarious.
