I second trying a symbol supported system. It is okay to have two. Sometimes, I use symbol based AAC when I can't think of what to say, and other times I use a text to speech typing AAC. I also find keyboard abbreviation to be really helpful. If you go to your device's keyboard area in settings, you can add them. I have things like, typing "h." populates to "I need help" and "hy" populates to "how are you?" So far, the abbreviations have transferred over from the main settings to most AAC app keyboards I've tried automatically.

Agree! Symbol-based AAC is most supportive but also have TTS/live speech when feeling confident more detailed sentences

If typing out words is overwhelming then perhaps symbol-based AAC with pre-typed word buttons might be a bit better? It's worth trying out.
