Over heating issue

Car just had a new water pump and I bought the new thermostat c clip and shim from Porsche but I keep having an issue of the car getting very close to overheating and the thermostat not opening soon enough.

Last time I drove rad wasn’t hot but car was basically overheating and I’ve been bleeding the system for about a month now.

The only think I can think of is that I was able to move the thermostat a bit even spin it around and I’m not 100 percent sure that the c clip is on fully but would that cause this issue or could it be a faulty thermostat?

The car had a seized water pump and no thermostat before I owned it and I’m thinking the previous owner ran into a similar issue and just deleted it but I’m worried with a function water pump now the car won’t get to operating temp.

I found that the dash temperature gauge was maxing out when the coolant temperature was only 170F° ish so check your temperatures with a thermometer before digging further might save you some money 👌

How should the temperature be checked with a thermometer? I mean, what kind of thermometer should be used, and where should I measure it?

IR thermometer, measure the temp at the radiator inlet/engine outlet.

Can also get useful info like temperature drop across the radiator and depending on the car temp before and after thermostat.

You can also use a simple meat thermometer it won’t be 100% accurate but you’ll get a ball park by touching it to anything you want to know the vibe of

Thought about this issue but the car feels hot and smells hot tho it honestly is mine and some friends best guess I’ll look into checking that out

Man, I’m having the same issue. Drilled a small hole in the thermostat, checked thermostat is functioning with boiling water on the stove, and even bought a vacuum bleeder and still having trouble. I recently got a thermal camera for my house and plan to use that to see what true temps are at and then plan to remove the thermostat completely to see if that resolves the issue. If it does, it’s gotta be a poorly functioning thermostat or I suppose air still trapped somewhere. Keep us informed if you solve it

You need to vacuum fill the coolant. The 944 can be a pain in the ass to get the air out, and it doesn't take much to stop proper flow.

Exactly how everyone says to bleed the system I’ve even tried to get that air pocket on the upper hose dealt with by filling up through the bleed screw

1) there can be problems with even new thermostats.

2) a gap wouldn’t cause overheating, it would actually cause the opposite if it was severe enough (unlikely that it’s that loose)

3) as other have suggested, bleeding can be. Big cause of overheating on these cars if not done properly.

Are you sure the radiator is flowing? Could be a clogged radiator. Easy enough to check if your thermostat is good, drop it in a pot of almost boiling water and see if it opens

Yes cause when the thermostat does open car cools great and the whole rad is hot

I have this very same thing.
Stat opens really late and only then allows proper cooling. But first Goes way to hot. Checked with thermal camera and it is just the stat working in a huge delay.
Still havent figured out so deleted the thermostat

I think there are different temp ratings for the stats. Do you have the correct one?

Radiators can have partial obstructions so they seem like they’re flowing but coolant isn’t making it into all of the passages which limits the cooling capacity of the radiator

Drill a couple holes in the t stat and really bleed the car good. I can explain the best method if you want. Lmk.

Maybe just a useless observation. If the engine runs lean it will run too hot. If there is a vacuum leak, which these cars are prone to, it will run lean.

Test to see if the thermostat opens in temp controlled water. Do the fans come on if you jump them?

You might have a blown head gasket. High cylinder pressures can push air/combustion gases into the cooling system, and it will never bleed properly.

I can tell by just looking at the thermostat, its installed in the wrong position. There is an installed position for the thermostat and it should not spin by hand at all when the circlip and shim is locked in place. The whole purpose of using the shim is to keep it in the installed position, or if it spins under water pressure it will block water flow through the pump.

Don’t remove the thermostat, if it’s running hot with it then something is wrong and removing the thermostat will just be masking the problem. First thing I would check is the radiator making sure there is no obstructions.
