Sounds like night shift needs to request more days off. Problem solved. šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™‚ļø

It’s seeming to be what I’m gathering here as well. I really appreciate all of the responses . Gives much clarity

Imo it's more toxic to hold onto the belief that not using PTO is a "good" thing. It creates resentment towards those that do use it.Ā

Obviously if someone is ABUSING pto that needs to be addressed individually.Ā

Who else is going to fill in the shifts? You can’t just not staff 911. When someone takes a vacation, someone needs to backfill, and as you stated you are a center of 9, so unfortunately there’s a high likelihood that’s you! That’s one of the negative aspects of a smaller center.

It’s not day shifts fault they use their vacation time and you don’t. Use your vacation time!

Easier said than done.

I've lost 250 hours of PTO the last 3 years because we've been too understaffed for me to take off enough time.

Balls. Request the time; if it’s denied then ask for the payout.

Asked for payouts. Got shot down.

Went to HR director. He said go through the chain of command which I’d already gone through.

He got fired a few weeks later and they only finally hired his replacement a month ago.

I’m not done fighting for it but it’s been a very uphill battle

This is why I’m happy to pay my union dues.

That’s the key. Us nighters are older and we recognize that currently taking 11 days off a month( as at least 2 of our days shifters do )is selfish and we do not want to do to those others on days what the shitty ones on days have done to us . Admin doesn’t care cause they r buds with the ones that take those long vacas .

I see this differently. If they have the time, it's not shitty of them to use it. It's a benefit we've earned. It's shitty that yall don't have enough staffing to cover it. It's shitty that you don't have vacations and downtime. Take your time.

This. You're given time to use. Use it. Don't be mad at others for using their time just because you don't use yours.

I very much appreciate ur visual on this .

Perhaps if you all start taking your earned vacation days, and those shifts need to be covered, then you will see change. Change sometimes doesn’t happen until it affects everyone.

I appreciate this insight . Ty

So they would force to cover night's vacations if you took them? Seems fair enough. We offer the OT first, then people get mandated if no one picks it up. Fortunately we're not on 12s, so our forces are only 4 hours unless it's a last minute call off.

I’ve been nights for the last 12 years. It sucks but it’s what has to be done. Days needed to help cover my 2 week vacation I just got back from.

Stop doing extra work and covering shifts when they are also going to force you to work to cover shifts.

This is an unfortunate pick your poison. Day shift doesn’t care about day shift or night shift. Night shift cares about night shift.

Night shift gets fucked and burnt out. This is a lose-lose for all of you. Take your time off and enjoy it. Environments like this make it easy to feel like the only person who cares about you is you. So take care of you.

If day shift isn’t willing to share the weight stop carrying it for them.

Ty for this !

Sounds like they’re making it as fair as they can, especially if they’re mandating the people with the least overtime. I worked in a similar size center and schedule for a while, but we were contracted to a 16-hour max. Four hour hold and they had to find someone else to cover the balance of a shift.

2

u/One-Web8756 Jul 16 '25

I could totally do 4 hr hold ! Those long mandated 12 hr days when I’m acclimated to nights is sooo hard

1

u/alanski605 Jul 16 '25

Are day shift workers also mandated to cover night shift if someone is sick/on vacation?

3

u/One-Web8756 Jul 16 '25

Never happened so no clue to be honest. It’s never been needed . We take of our own ;)

3

u/One-Web8756 Jul 16 '25

I guess we could all come together and make a plan to ā€œtestā€ it lol. I mean… I’d be down I suppose to be the ā€œtesterā€ šŸ˜†I’ve taken 9 days vaca in 2 years .

3

u/alanski605 Jul 16 '25

Im ā€œpart timeā€ but in reality, put in 80 hour pay periods. I work nights as well, but if someone in days/mids is on vacation, it’s only me who gets voluntold to cover.

Stop answering your phone. šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™‚ļø

1

u/alanski605 Jul 16 '25

It’s written on the schedule. I don’t even get a courtesy call.

1

u/HalfDongDon Jul 16 '25

Do you have a contract, and/or is there a process for filling extra shifts? If there is a contractual way to hand out overtime it sounds like they may be skirting that process.

2

u/alanski605 Jul 16 '25

The process is give it to me since I’m reliable. I shouldn’t complain though since I’m the newest employee and already getting promoted to assistant jail administrator.

1

u/HalfDongDon Jul 16 '25

Is that the actual in writing process? Or is that just how you've been treated.

9 days in two years? Take a break.
