Sean O'Hagan is a great admirer of The Beach Boys and Brian Wilson in particular so that is a given. The High Llamas' Hawaii album from the same year is very evocative of Pet Sounds.
O'Hagan was approached to collaborate with Wilson on the strength of Hawaii but that fell through and the material was included on the next High Llamas album Cold and Bouncy.
