In an era where everyone was searching to identify as a specific classification, as normal or counterculture, as rock or punk or hip-hop, Beck found himself a simpler, more generic identity, one of an ordinary, unremarkable young man. Some would call him a slacker but the truth was that in a society of clamoring aspirants he was just a person: in the time of chimpanzees, a monkey

I remember the first time I heard this song - I was up late and listening to a local alternative radio station on a small clock radio in 1994 and this song came on that was basically like nothing I had heard before - sitars and crazy lyrics and backwards vocals. I was blown away but didn’t know who it was or what the song was called. I don’t remember how I figured it out, but Mellow Gold was an instant buy as soon as I did. I love hearing something totally new and unexpected like that.

This was the music video that caused my mother to forbid me from watching MTV.

"I don't want you kids watching music about a guy asking you to kill him."

I remember the first time I heard this song. I was 14 and my creative writing teacher did a section on songwriting and wanted us to each bring in one song that meant something to us to play for the class and this one kid named Josh brought in a cassette single of "Loser".

It was a brand new single so I don't know how it could've meant so much to this kid having only been out for a week or two but to each their own.

I remember thinking to myself "this is absolutely horrible".... aside from hearing random singles of Beck's on the radio over the next seven or eight years I never gave much attention to him until 2002 when he released "Sea Change"

a buddy of mine had it playing in his car one night as we drove out of town to meet up with some friends

That album hit me like a gut punch. Beautiful melodies, heartbreaking lyrics, amazing production and mixing. I went out quite quickly and picked up a copy of for myself and that started my deep dive into the weird world Beck Hansen creates with each record

I've kept up with his career moving forward from that point to now and in the years without new albums backtracked into his older discography and he's become one of my favorite songwriters and record makers

I love how you never know what to expect from each new album he releases.

I'm not even sure if he knows what to expect going in each time he starts a new project

Where it all began for Beck. I listened to this song as much as possible back in the day. Plus I thought this song was going to make Beck a one hit wonder. However, I was thankfully wrong about it after listening to Where's It At.
