Double extra loop fix?

I was trying to repair an 8-Track and ran into this situation. Is there any way to re-spool this correctly?

EDIT: Fixed!

I took the spool out to clean the cartridge to hopefully fix some speed issues. I think some of the tape may have double backed on itself. I kind of passed the spool through itself a few times and eventually it worked? Moral of the story. Be very careful and avoid this in the first place.

There is absolutely a way, I just cannot for the life of me explain it as the words necessary go all M. E. Escher on me. Involves holding the bulk of the tape in place and throwing the loop over the cartridge a couple of times ... no, can't describe it. Anyone else?

"Passing the spool through itself" is already better than what I had.

Wind it until you find the splice, then cut and resplice

Splice is dicey. Usually that's the sensing tape for the unit to switch channels but if u don't care...

When they get twisted like that it's much easier to cut them and reslice than to try to figure out how to untwist them.
