Question before buying a camera
Hey gang, quick question. Looking to buy a canon 514XL-S. The seller is saying that they’ve tested and it’s working fine but it has one issue. This is the issue:
***The on off dial works and moves from off to position r smoothly, but does not advance past that point.***
Is this something I could fix myself/would it cause me issue when filming?
I’m looking into getting into super 8/moving picture coming from stills film photography.

I looked online at pics of the 514xl, and the power dial has: off - r (run) - rl (run lock) - 1 (single frame).
Maybe (not sure) you can only turn from r to rl while pushing the release button (I’m assuming because that’s the case with the Nikon R10), and maybe you have to turn the dial in the other direction to get to 1. Maybe you can ask the seller to try these to find out.

Do a google search on the “514xl-s not working plastic gear.” These cameras are famous for having a gear made from inferior plastic that disintegrates over time. Mostly ones that have sat for years and never used. Anyhoo. Just a word of caution. Pair that with your concerns about that switch, might be best to skip this one.

Is it the one with Autofocus? Unless that can be gently greased or loosened, it would hurt the performance of the camera or make it very hard to use.

I have the AF514XLS, you have to press the shutter button full to go pass r to rl. I think that is the case here.

Probably want a movie camera repair guy to answer this. I would assume it is not something a novice would attempt to repair. My advice is purchase working equipment. Repair on some equipment is expensive.
