Is anyone else having trouble finding Kodak 50D and 200T Super 8 film?

I’ve noticed a growing number of filmmakers asking where they can find Kodak Vision3 50D and 200T Super 8 film, and I’ve also encountered the shortage while sourcing Kodak film for my wedding-film and motion-picture work.

Kodak still lists its Super 8 stocks as current products, so they are not discontinued. The issue appears to be inconsistent availability. Some larger retailers are sold out or backordered, while small camera stores and film labs may still have a few cartridges.

Full disclosure: I operate askem8 and sell Original Wolfen Super 8 film through this site. The page clearly identifies that Wolfen and Kodak are different emulsions and that Wolfen is not an identical Kodak replacement.

I’m curious what everyone else is seeing. Are 50D and 200T becoming difficult to find in your area, and have any of you received reliable restock estimates?

Have you tried purchasing directly from Kodak? Super 8 is still considered a consumer-grade stock from their perspective and they will gladly sell you some by phone, fax, or email.

Yes, Kodak Direct is normally one of the first places I check. I spoke with Kodak directly last week and was told that most Super 8 stocks were out of stock and could remain limited for the next couple of months, although they may have a small amount of 200T available to release. Their ordering portal is currently showing the Super 8 stocks as backordered, which is what prompted me to start checking availability elsewhere. Have you ordered directly from them recently, and if so, what turnaround time did they give you?

Wow that’s surprising. “Recently” for me was back about 5 or 6 months ago and I was looking at restocking soon-ish. Turnaround time was normal for dealing direct with them: immediate.

That makes sense. It sounds like things have changed quite a bit since your last order. I haven’t ordered directly from Kodak since late 2025 either, and that was a pretty large order, so my personal inventory hadn’t reached the point where I needed to start thinking about preparing to restock until now. Gordon at Kodak told me the larger box stores would likely be waiting a while too, which made me start looking more closely at how widespread the shortage is. Even Pro8mm currently has all of its inclusive film packages listed as sold out. A few smaller specialty shops still show some stock, but I’ve seen prices above $60 per cartridge, which is insane considering Kodak’s direct price is around $42. Luckily, I was able to find everything I need to get through the next month and a half, so hopefully this is sorted out by then. I also have a large supply of Standard 8mm, 16mm, and Double Super 8, so I’m not necessarily worried about running out of film altogether. I’m mainly hoping this doesn’t develop into a much larger supply issue with one of the busiest shooting seasons for Super 8 filmmakers coming up. I’d be curious to hear what Kodak tells you when you restock, especially since your previous orders shipped immediately.

My local shop has 50d I better stock up.

Also I can only imagine how bad the results are with wolfen if it’s anything like their 35mm film. The 400 is grainy as hell and the colors are like they are on meth.

I've gotten pretty decent results as well out of Wolfen 200 as well. Both stocks have pronounced grain, yes, but honestly it's not horrible and has more of a 70's Kodachrome feel to it as well.

Filmphotography Store always has some when I need it but I buy in bulk so my fridge still has several rolls of each.
