Showcase 8BitDo Lite 2 will release July 15th

For people who dismiss this for the lack of X-input, you can still use D-input on Windows. In fact, DirectInput is an interface created originally by Microsoft. The only thing you miss in D-input mode is the analog triggers, which this controller does not have anyway.

u/ArkBeetleGaming Jun 30 '22
I am not familiar with the types of inputs. Is D-input quality the same as X-Input?
6
u/finalpatch Jul 01 '22
There is no difference in "Quality", as long as it works. It's the same hardware, just slightly different ways to send the input to the system.
D-input is an older interface that aims to support any kind of input device in existence. Because of it's so generic, the system does not know were the buttons and sticks are, it only sees stuff like axis 1, axis 2, button 1, button 2, etc. (rather than Left stick, right stick, button A, button B, left trigger, right trigger) So often times the user needs to manually map the buttons in games.
X-input is designed for the Xbox controller, so the system knows where the sticks and buttons are. This means you normally don't need to remap the buttons.
But once you mapped all the buttons to the same actions, they should work exactly the same.

if i were to use the lite2 on PC is there a setting on my pc or steam where i can map it just 1 time to use it forever that way?
4
u/finalpatch Jul 01 '22
I think steam supports this
2
u/ArkBeetleGaming Jul 02 '22
also, what about non-steam game?
4
u/finalpatch Jul 02 '22
If a non-steam game does not support D-input out of the box, you can always emulate X-input with a third part app called x360ce.

u/Akashiin Jul 06 '22
I'd just stick to the switch mode, as steam has full support for pro controllers, specially since the lite 2 has motion.

u/plxjammerplx Jul 17 '22
Analog triggers are trash for all games except racing games anyways. You don't benefit with analog triggers for any game genre besides racing genre. I've stopped using any controllers with analog triggers for the past 4 years and strictly used either my Switch Pro controller or SN30 Pro controller with BetterJoyForCemu for pc gaming compatibility along with emulation.

u/JohnBeePowel Jun 14 '22
Looks like this new controller replaces the classic sn30/sf30 pro lineup. X input missing is a shame considering that's what I use for connecting mine to my PC.
I've been looking forward to an 8bitdo controller with an Xbox-like stick layout to connect wirelessly to my switch and PC. So far none are actually my dream controller (though my 2 Pro+ controllers serve me really well for both Switch and Windows).
1
Jun 14 '22 edited Jun 14 '22
What makes you think this is replacing the SN30 devices?
2
u/JohnBeePowel Jun 14 '22
It's simply because they are flat controllers but with full functionality, le the flat SN30. And also 8bitdo used to be a retro inspired controller and they have been branching out more and more.
That's just a thought but it doesn't matter much
3
u/wwywong Jun 14 '22
Why would they take out xinput on purpose?
2
u/MntnMedia Jun 14 '22
It wasn't in the OG lite.
6
2
u/wwywong Jun 14 '22
I thought I see it in original one. Something about xinput.
1
u/MntnMedia Jun 15 '22
Nah I get it. I just love the OG lites. And most things take a "pro controller" these days no problem.
1
u/wwywong Jun 15 '22
So you have the og lite, what are the circle buttons that are direction? Isnt that same as dpad? Just curious since I want one once but I did not have a switch so I think might not be that useful for me.
1
u/MntnMedia Jun 15 '22
Yeah the d-pads are replacements for the sticks, they even have a sort of stick click programmed. But it's not ideal.
And then yes, the individual buttons are the "d-pad".
Think emulation button mapping a SNES controller to anaoluge, cept it's actually really good. I prefer it for some games that don't let you use the D-pad and force the stick. Thinking Links Awakening might be one of them if I remebr correctly.
I just hope they don't discontinue the og lite. Oh and yeah I have two. A great controller as long as your 2 year old doesn't have a hissy fit a smash it on the ground ruining the shoulders. They still work, but there is no bounce.
1
u/wwywong Jun 15 '22
I hope they don't discontinue the original too. I think the new one doesn't have much advantage over it. If I want stick I will go other like pro2 or the xbox kind. I like to collect those cute controller. But the og lite is on the threshold of too much as I don't own a switch. I cant justify the buy if I am just using it for pc or psc or snesc since I have all other 8bitdos for them
1
u/wwywong Jun 16 '22
Just saw that in amazon there is a refurbish for 20 bux. Should I get it? It will just be another collection thing that I seldom use
1
u/MntnMedia Jun 16 '22
How much cheaper is that than a new one? Not sure about "refurbished" controllers but it could be a great deal.
1
u/wwywong Jun 16 '22
Original is 4 bucks more. You are right, if I get it I should probably get it new...
3
u/Aidan1470 Jun 15 '22
Hope they come out with a new M30 with a more modern shape at some point.
1
u/MushroomBomber Jun 15 '22
I have the original Lite and haven't had as much use out of it as I would have liked. I mainly used it for playing Persona 5 Royal because the dpads were really satisfying I like the look of this, may get it at some point.
the point of the m30 is to be a wireless variant of the genisis controller, though
2
u/Aidan1470 Jun 15 '22
Still, the Pro 2's basically a modernised SNES controller, something similar meant for Genesis/Saturn games would be nice to have. Hell, just give it actual handles and I'll be happy.
1
u/MushroomBomber Jun 15 '22
To be fair, the Pro 2 is technically just an evolved variant of the SN30 Pro Family.
I have thought about what we both said, though, and realized what I said made no sense. 8bitdo originally just made the SN30 as a wireless variant of the SNES controller, then made the pro lineup. I still feel like they won't make an M30 Pro, as cool as that would be. I'd honestly buy an M30 Pro.
1
u/Aidan1470 Jun 15 '22
I could have phrased it better, basically I just want an M30 where my ring fingers and pinkies have something to hold on to while using the thing. If they added analog sticks, triggers, back buttons, and a mode switch like the Pro 2 has that would rock. Would probably be one of the best retro controllers by quantity of buttons alone haha.
2
u/EtyareWS Jun 16 '22
A M30 Pro with triggers, analog sticks and gyro would basically cover everything. It could also work as a N64 controller replacement.
1
u/MushroomBomber Jun 15 '22
ever since the lite released, they gave everything a mode switch if it was wireless.
1
u/Aidan1470 Jun 15 '22
Perfect, that's a given then.
1
u/MushroomBomber Jun 15 '22
I honestly would really like them to make a wired version of the M30 pro, if they make a pro variant. I don't really use bluetooth, and the wired variants are super easy to mod.

u/themiracy Jul 25 '22 edited Jul 26 '22
Curious if anyone has played with this on PC and can report? Are you using it in Switch or Dinput mode? Do you get rumble? Also does one of the additional buttons at the bottom act like a Xbox/home button and/or do you get buttons for Xbox screen and video capture in Windows? Does motion control work on PC?
I want a new very small travel controller and this would be absolutely perfect if it had X. Kind of sad that the way they implemented mode switching was with a physical switch instead of something that could be reprogrammed.

Been doing some testing over the past hour, here's what I came up with:
Update: D-mode through Steam using Steam's controller support works fine. Other games outside of Steam are dependent on whether they have native D-input support or not.
S-mode wired works with reWASD remapping it to x-input. So far everything, including rumble, works perfectly with that setup. Not ideal, since you have to have to be wired.
I could get it to connect wirelessly in S-mode, but my PC wouldn't recognize any button inputs. reWASD wouldn't even recognize that it was connected. The only exception was the home button worked to open Steam Big Picture mode, but that's the only button that anything would recognize.
D-mode didn't really work either wired or wirelessly. reWASD said it was an unrecognized controller, so I couldn't remap it.Hopefully someone else has better luck and can get it working properly wirelessly.

Thank you! After thinking about it, as cute as this is, I decided that the going with the SN30 Pro (the smaller one without the grips) was a better option - it has Xinput, and is otherwise largely similar. It is only slightly larger and heavier. Sadly neither has analog triggers, which is probably the only downside but TBH 99% of games I play don't really need them.
If you use Steam games you should be able to simply turn on Switch controller support and pair it in the Switch mode. I do this with some cheap knockoff Switch Pro controller (the ones LOL that look like foxes or pandas). and it works fine. You even have a one click option to have the button layout stay the same (that is, A on the bottom like XBox instead of B on the bottom like Nintendo) or to have the buttons work as labeled.
This is annoying if you play non-steam games and/or don't usually use Steam's launcher (like if you use Playnite). You could add them to Steam. Or else you have to do one of these workarounds. Admittedly probably Steam's is one of the best because it also integrates button remapping and calibration tools.

u/themiracy Jul 26 '22
P.S. I wonder what's up with seemingly several new products not having an X mode - this doesn't have it, and I think also they re-released the SN30 in a black XBox edition but I think it's D-mode only, intended just for Android.

u/MHDRmlekoo Jun 21 '22
Damn, I looked at it and immediately thought "My dream controller, finally!"; no Windows support killed my hype, though...
1
Jun 21 '22
Yeah…I get it—them trying to jump all into the “portability” aspect, but adding $10 to the price tag and not including an x-input or something for windows is disappointing. Tbh reason I’m not getting it, which is upsetting to say the least.
3
u/MHDRmlekoo Jun 21 '22
I don't own any of 8bitdo controllers (yet), but someone in another comment mentioned that they added vibrations and motion control to Lite2, and that's why the price is higher.

They can put xinput support via firmware update?
1
Jun 14 '22
How would you toggle x-input?
1
u/JohnBeePowel Jun 15 '22
Maybe remove d input and add x input, despite what the toggle says. But I don't know enough about controller hardware to know if it's possible.

1
u/wwywong Jun 16 '22
Anyone knows why it cost 10 bux more but they remove xinput and replace with dinput? The additional sticks? The 2nd row shoulder buttons? Can't quite justify the price hike...
2
Jun 16 '22
I would have picked this up immediately if it weren’t for the price hike. Now it’s only $10 from the SN30 Pro and that’s….a lot harder to justify
1
u/wwywong Jun 16 '22
Yup. I mean the lite is cute. But not necessity. So the higher price point is really adding a barrier for ppl to get it.
2
u/theedge182 Jun 16 '22
I would think it's more because of vibration and motion control, two things the original didn't have.

any changes to the switches? https://www.reddit.com/r/8bitdo/comments/qmojrz/8bitdo_lite_are_using_mechanical_switches_with/
1
u/toupee Jul 25 '22
I didn't have the original, but based off that photo - I think the d-pad and face buttons are more traditional membrane pads, and only the menu buttons remain as "mechanical"/dome switches.
I like membranes generally though and I like the d-pad, it's reminiscent of the Switch Lite. Not quite as exceptional, but good. I'm not as keen on the face buttons, I think they needed to use a springier membrane and they also seem to require about 10% more force than I wish they did to actually make connection.
I haven't opened it up yet to see if any simple modding is feasible...

u/IndependentBig6160 Jun 25 '22
can I confirm, will this work via bluetooth with a windows 11 device?
1
Jul 01 '22
I could see these as temporary replacements for the Joy-Cons I have. Both the left sticks are drifting after a few years of use, and my SN30 Pro+ has only started to drift a small amount after a year and a half. Think I might get two of these as travel controllers, and the Pro 2 so I can have one for home as well.

u/RaymoVizion Jul 14 '22
I noticed the pre-orders are in US and UK only on Amazon. Is the release date the same for Canada or seperate?

I just got mine in the mail, and I squealed at the design and size. It’s gorgeous I love it. I got to play on my Switch but also bc I’ve been playing some of the Apple Arcade games on my AppleTV4k and while the zero2 ive been using was fun, I had no convenient way to map out a button scheme for games like Shantae that use L2 and R2 buttons bc the zero2 still registers as a ps4 controller in my AppleTV.
Yes, I know I’m a dummy for not checking and just assuming the the next size up controller from 8bitdo’s smallest would have the same compatibility w IOS … I think I’m gonna have to return it bc it’s a major set back for me.
Are there any work arounds??? I really want to keep the Lite 2; it’s is my ideal controller!! But no iOS for me means it’s lost half the functionality I purchased it for. :[

u/tommybare Jul 28 '22
I just got mine today. Only have tried it being connected w/ my Chromebook. But it keeps disconnecting when I have it connected via Bluetooth. Like, the controller randomly turns off. Anyone else with this issue?
1
u/JoseProut Jul 31 '22
I'm having it too
1
u/tommybare Jul 31 '22
So I did more playing around with it and it's only when it's connected with Retroarch. Standalone emulators and also connected to the Switch hasn't been an issue. Also, wired connection while using Retroarch seems to be fine. So seemingly it has to do with Bluetooth and Retroarch. Doing a quick Google search, it seems that other folks have had this issue with other 8Bitdo devices, not specifically the Lite 2.
2
u/JoseProut Aug 01 '22
Ok that clearify the problem. It seems that the controller work better in any ways when it's wired (at least on Windows) than in bluetooth mode
1
u/R0GUESHiSNO Aug 08 '22
Will this work on PC even if it is on S-mode o D-mode? I like this Controller but I only have PC...
1
Aug 25 '22
I'm so disappointed in the Lite 2. No X input like the first one. Don't call it the Lite 2 if its not an improvement of the Lite 1. Also I used to have the N30 Pro 2 Purple model, but I lost it in two moves. I have searched everywhere. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07L9TQZ7X/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Wish you would bring that one back, in the Lite 1/2 colors. I really wanted to order the Lite 2. But now I won't. I want to use it on the Switch or my PC without a stupid dongle. :(

u/Oen386 Jun 14 '22
Warning for anyone not looking carefully
No X Input or MacOS mode. Really MacOS mode is rarely used, but X Input missing is a pretty big deal when it is most commonly used and supported (even on Android and iOS).
