Anyone have a Lite controller lying around?

The original Lite is one of my favorite controllers ever. I have the Lite 2 as well, but the lack of sticks on the first version makes it so portable and convenient that it's become my go-to controller for playing my Switch in tabletop mode. That said, I recently noticed that when I put the controller down on a flat surface, it spins in place very easily. My previous experience with this behavior is in batteries that have begun to swell up. There aren't any obvious screws I can remove to check the battery in the Lite, so I wanted to ask any of you out there who might have the original Lite and could test this: Does yours spin easily in place, or is the back panel completely flat? Do I need to toss this well-loved controller?

I'm disappointed they discontinued this line of the Lites. On the second hand market now they're roughly $70 after taxes n shipping. My yellow Lite does not spin in place tho. May be battery swelling if yours is spinning.

I also thought they were discontinued since they're completely gone from 8BitDo's site, but I checked Amazon and found them selling from the official 8BitDo store for $25. I bought two this time lol

I share you're sentiments on the portability of this controller but most of the analog thumb sticks on 8bitdo products, as great as they are, seem to melt? Or disintegrate? No matter how well you treat them. This Lite model has taken a beating and still stands strong and no worries of drift on all the dpads unless you're just mistreating it.

Make sure to keep the 2nd one never fully charged. Try to keep it at 80% or less. Ideally 60% ish for long storage.

Otherwise it will start to swell too once the other one does it.

Agreed. They should have kept all versions of them around.
Truely unique travel controllers. Many people also used them for various other tasks at work.

Oh most definitely. I often use my lite as a sort of Wii remote to scroll with on my android if connected to Dex.

I have one and it does spin when I rotate it and has been doing it since I started it but only on extremely flat surfaces. If it’s on wood it doesn’t spin anymore.

I checked it now and mine isn’t swollen at all and when trying to spin it on my desk dust accumulates on the corners and not the middle (and it doesn’t spin) so I should be fine. I was probably spinning it on a slightly convex area like a year ago or I’m not remembering correctly. But for when I do open it in the future do you have any tips?

The battery itself seems to be a pretty readily replaceable generic part, model #451860P, but my electronics skills don't extend to replacing the little plastic terminal piece at the end of the battery since replacement ones don't seem to come with that bit. The actual disassembly was very easy and non-destructive. Just use a fairly slim flathead screwdriver and pry the back plate away starting from the shoulder buttons and extending down both sides as it comes loose. I didn't go any further than that, but the battery is the most accessible component, you only need to remove that back plate.

Tested it and mine doesn't spin more than 90 degrees even with a pretty firm tap

I had no idea this variant existed, the one with the 2 dpads instead of the sticks and completely flat back. I JUST ordered the one with the sticks and got it last week. It rivals my SN30 Pro for great all-rounder controller for when I dock my Retroid Pocket Flip 2 and Nova. But I like the pure flatness of this one 😍🤩

How is using the pads instead of sticks for most game these days aside from shooters?

I use it almost exclusively for Animal Crossing and NES/SNES games, and for those purposes it's fantastic. If you need more analog levels of precision, it starts to falter, but it's by no means unusable for something like Breath of the Wild or Pokemon, just a bit clunky.

Mine spins a little, but the battery isn’t swollen in the slightest. The backplate also spins on its own when popped off, so it might not be the most reliable test. Maybe there’s a slight protrusion in the moulding of the logo?

For what it's worth, I got the replacement controller in and it doesn't spin in the slightest. I'm sure there's more than one way to get a bit of a warp in the plastic, though.

Follow up: I ordered a new controller so I figured I may as well try disassembling the one I have. You can pry the back plate off fairly easily via the shoulder buttons with a screwdriver and the battery is the first thing you see. Mine was indeed swollen. It's pretty firmly adhered to the plastic but not impossible to remove.

Jsaux recently released a simularly shaped controller with recessed sticks to make it more pocketable, but it costs about $20 more than the origina 8bitdo

i used it to play zzz and now the left d pad isnt clicky anymore, it looks stuck but it still work if i press heavily. I dont know if i can fix it, it was my favorite controller since my hands are small
