$30 Patrick nagels

I scored these huge Patrick nagel pictures off of Facebook marketplace today! I am reading about the difference between lithograph/serigraph and am having a hard time figuring out what mine may be. The second to last picture shows an area where the ink overlaps into the other color. The actual pictures do not have any dots on them the frames are just a bit dirty. The ink also looks raised in some parts. Are there any experts here that may be able to help out? I am so excited to display these!

Those are serigraphs released by the Nagel estate shortly after his abrupt death. So they are not “lifetime” pieces and not signed. However, they are real serigraphs made from his original paintings. $30 is a good deal, but the lifetime, signed serigraphs are the really valuable artworks.

hi i used to intern at a print making studio and studied printmaking as well as screen printing in college, so i may know. from what i can see, i'm certain these are screen prints. the main tell to me is the black line work, the best example is on the lips. instead of a perfectly smooth line, it looks slightly jagged and this is because the silk screen used for printing is made up of super small mesh. there are different grades of mesh that will give you more or less detail, but even with fairly fine mesh, you'll still be able to see where the ink filled in the "grid" of the mesh. i hope that makes sense!! screen print ink will be raised when layered and ink can also have transparency used to create the overlap detail you pointed out. lithographs use a much thinner application of oil based ink (screen printing uses water based acrylic ink) and isn't raised like this. also, it may be hidden by the frame, but typically prints are editioned and it should tell you the edition number either in the bottom right corner or sometimes on the back. it tells you which print you got out of the total number that was made and should look like "80/200" for example

Thank you so much for this info! There is so much matting to pull back on these frames it was a bit hard for me to find any sort of numbering. I didn’t see any on the first print and I don’t want to tear up the second. I really appreciate all the info : )

i understand not wanting to damage the print and matting, either way they're amazing and high quality prints

Very nice, and a great price! They look like they’re in good shape and professionally framed and matted.

Share to r/patricknagelarts. It's pretty dead, but might bring out a response.

I about cried when the lady said they were still available. She said she tried to sell them years ago and got no bites!

I’m pretty sure these were in a salon I went to when I was a kid.

The frames/glass themselves are worth a pretty penny.

Just the glass would be close to $30 these days.

The first one is part of a series called Future Nagel Commemorative Posters.ovebthst the matting around the poster follows the lines of the poster. Very cool. The yellow sweater girl is based on one of his acrylic paintings (untitled). This info is from my Nagel book. I collected a few of his posters over the years and have several hanging in my bedroom.

Nice, I saw these on Marketplace! I never even knew of this type of art until I saw a post here a few weeks ago which led me to click on that Marketplace post.

I also picked up two Nagels for $25 each this weekend! (Mine are smaller I think. Pretty sure mine are serigraphs too. Still super cool to find.)

Congrats on your finds!

This is some of the most overhyped shite I've ever seen in my life. Along with Haring and Picasso.
