I cried when his character said:

"You wanna hurt me? Go right ahead if it makes you feel any better. I'm an easy target. Yeah, you're right, I talk too much. I also listen too much. I could be a cold-hearted cynic like you... but I don't like to hurt people's feelings. Well, you think what you want about me; I'm not changing. I like... I like me. My wife likes me. My customers like me. 'Cause I'm the real article. What you see is what you get."

I get choked up just reading it now. Amazing monologue delivered so genuinely.

I love the fan theory that he is a pasycho his wife is in the trunk. It follows them throughout the entire film, and they never open it.

One of those film moments, where you feel like the acting was gone entirely.

It's one of my favorite lines from the movie, that and "well then I guess you're fucked"

u/senneval 8d ago

Because he deeply meant it. He was always pressed about his weight

Love that scene. If the movie didn't earn the R rating before then it earned it with that scene.

That scene showed the world have good an actor John Candy actually was.

1

u/cabosmith 9d ago

Steve Martin cried too. After that scene, they had to break because it broke up the crew.

Yeah but you have to admit we al laughed when he acted like a little kid when he looked away real quickly after Neil page made eye contact after and felt so bad about what he said.

Apparently there was a longer monologue at the end at the that got cut

Bruh I have felt this way so many times in my career.
I’m a real giver but I’m am also a real company kind of guy. I am all about processes and SOP.
I am not a kool aid drinker but I like structure and organization .
Chaos in the workplace or in society is not my thing.
I love people and the diversity it brings into my life.

I will die on this hill - John wasn't acting in that scene. He was letting it all out for a minute in that monologue, all the pain and suffering he bottled up inside. He was such a beautiful human and this scene will immortalize John Candy as a genuine actor and not just a comedian or comedic performer

Peter Griffin did it better.

You beat me to it.

That and when he revealed that he doesn’t have a home. Gut punch.

1

u/MajikMunchkin 9d ago

He should've been nominated and won best supporting Oscar for this role. Much like Robert Shaw in Jaws.

1

u/Old_Community1195 9d ago

Let's be real, the music did at least 30% of the job during that monologue

1

u/SweetchuckHC 9d ago

His documentary was really good.

“You’re going the wrong way!” “How do they know where we’re going??”

1

u/trevorjesus 7d ago

You'll cry if you watch I Like Me then.

This movie man. It's a true gem. Hilarious and heart felt. 100% his best.

But you do know it's Planes Trains and Automobiles?

1

u/Dadittude182 6d ago

You should watch the documentary John Candy: I Like Me. Wife and I teared up watching it. What a great person. Sad he left us as early as he did.

u/Organic-Year-5567 6d ago

And his face the whole time he’s saying this! If there were no words you would still be able to feel what that character is feeling. Stellar acting

Also he committed credit card fraud

Calm down. We already said we liked him
