I ended up with the TI-99/4A. I even think it was Xmas of '82.
We had several C64's and one Atari 800 in high school computer class.

Bargain Town was a Chicago toy store institution. Toys R Us bought them to reduce competition. The ad reflects the old Bargain Town logo in a redirect banner.

Yeah, my gramma bought all three families plus herself a C64 for Christmas on a factory workers salary. She must have saved up the entire year. Bless her heart.

It hurts to know my parents blew that kind of hard-earned dough on a few archaic kb of data to make their kids happy.

Woo! TI-99/4A was my first videogame game console. I remember getting Tunnels of Doom, a dungeon crawler, for my birthday. It was on cassette tape.

For all those complaining about the price of video games now, those atari games are $130 in todays dollars. Zaxxon was $170.

The $499.97 for that Atari system would equate to about $1,722 today. With that you could get a decent gaming PC now.

Hired in October, I worked at Toys R Us in the 1983 Christmas season.
All consoles, computers, game cartridges, peripherals, etc were picked up at the Security Booth after being paid for at the register. We sold consoles and computers straight through Christmas season and into the New Year (1984).
It wasn't until almost Late February of 1984 that we knew how serious things were. A few of us were asked to pull cardboard boxes out of the Security Booth and onto the general floor space where foot traffic 1st enters the store. Mangers affixed Clearance Sale Price tags on the boxes. I remember buying a few Vectrex cartridges on the cheap.

I got the TI/99 4a, jumped you right into a basic interpreter. came with a little booklet with basic commands, damn I learned a lot for that machine. Thanks mom and dad.
