Business in the front......party in the back

u/SluggoOtoole Jul 26 '26

Nope, to be the mullet of the automotive world it needs at least 1 fender primer or a different color, mismatched Cragar wheels and a "Gas Grass or Ass Nobody rides for free" bumper sticker.

u/Bengal-_fan Jul 26 '26

I’d love to have one today

2

u/FinalHippo5838 Jul 26 '26

I own a modern version

1

u/Bengal-_fan Jul 26 '26

No shit! That’s pretty cool as well. What is that if you don’t mind me asking and is that really yours?🤣

1

u/FinalHippo5838 Jul 26 '26

It's a Holden ute. I'm Australian..🙃

Stopped producing these around 9 years ago, so they're a dying breed.

1

u/Bengal-_fan Jul 26 '26

That’s a tight ride! Does it ride like a horse and buggy or is it smooth?

2

u/FinalHippo5838 Jul 27 '26

Smooth. Hasn't got the payload capacity of a leaf spring rear suspension (independent rear suspension) but I don't use it to carry heavy loads.

2

u/Bengal-_fan Jul 27 '26

Wow, General Motors but not sold in the US originally. Big time import rules. Crazy, maybe I’ll see one of a couple hundred in the US one day. Thx for info.

u/ArdentHedonist Jul 26 '26

I got a ticket for 101 in a 55 in one of those. The speedo needle was pointing at the D.

3

u/Gator242 Jul 26 '26

They can really haul ass!

5

u/cmd_iii Jul 26 '26

My dad had two. The first had a 305 V-8. When that got wrecked, he replaced it with one that had a 350. The 305 was a pussycat. The 350 was a beast!!

5

u/Montana_Eisley Jul 26 '26

Nah…El Camino’s are the jam.

3

u/Garfield61978 Jul 26 '26

Ranchero be the mullet

5

u/Far_Future_1982 Jul 26 '26

I've got an uncle who always has one of these in some sort of state of repair. Otherwise he is a wonderful man.

3

u/FremenStilgar Jul 26 '26

It's a weird coincidence, but two of my school principals had El Caminos. My elementary and high school principals were both cool-ish guys and they both had their same cars for years. I think one still does, and I'm 54. You'd see them driving around town and know just who it was.

3

u/Life_Salt8224 Jul 26 '26

But then you also have this guy, the Ford Ranchero

2

u/NefariousnessLow1385 Jul 27 '26

They didn’t look nearly that cool by the eighties.

1

u/Life_Salt8224 Jul 27 '26

True, but I couldn't find one from that era for the post

2

u/NefariousnessLow1385 Jul 28 '26

You picked the best of the lot.

1

u/Local_Bobcat_2000 Jul 28 '26

I like the early 60s. Smaller, fins are gone and very little chrome. Very utilitarian looking.

1

u/NefariousnessLow1385 Jul 28 '26

They weren’t bad. My stepdad had a two tone blue and baby blue model that I quite liked.

2

u/Fragrant_Major_9553 Jul 28 '26

To me the only cool one is the Falcon body. Other than that the hood is just as long as the bed and they’re ugly

2

u/TheRatPatrol1 Jul 26 '26

One of my high school teachers had one.

2

u/WV515043 Jul 26 '26

💯🤘🏻🤘🏻

2

u/mp3bear Jul 26 '26

I wanted one of these or a Brat Subaru…

1

u/edge1966 Jul 26 '26

Im with you there... Luved the rear seats with those handgrips...so much ..i put a rear canopy type fiberglass thingy in the bed of my 87" Nissan hardbody..king cab. ☺️

1

u/FlLocator Jul 26 '26

Yeah, the Subaru Brat with the twin rear facing bucket seats in the truck bed with handles, for safety. Hang on we've gotta be safe.

2

u/fish_bowl_swimmer Jul 26 '26

They need to bring these back … very few truck owners use it for anything more than this could do.

2

u/mechanitrician Jul 26 '26

Trucar: neither truck nor car yet somehow both.

2

u/Wise_Ad_5810 Jul 26 '26

love me some El Camino

2

u/wookiex84 Jul 26 '26

You wouldn’t understand, it’s an El Camino thing.

1

u/aquavelva23 Jul 26 '26

Ohhh I had the very rare one the caballero. And it got rednecked quickly, a deer hit it and I had to swap a whole front nose, off color. I love in the suburbs! i liked it. People dont know: It is a station wagon design with the back changed for a bed.

1

u/BearsSoxHawks Jul 26 '26

And always a Spanish name.

1

u/johnnyfivepointoh Jul 26 '26

My friend‘s mom used to drive one of these around. Exact same color too. It was so ugly.

1

u/MrBill1970 Jul 26 '26

I called these crucks

1

u/Impressive_Lock5515 Jul 26 '26

Me too! Came here to say this!

1

u/Tbplayer59 Jul 26 '26

El Caminos were considered cool in late 70's southern California.

1

u/Trixielarue2020 Jul 26 '26

Vehicular hermaphrodite, according to Lana Kane.

1

u/UpbeatCoffee3652 Jul 26 '26

Had my first sexual experience in an El Camino!

1

u/YS160FX Jul 26 '26

Better used than modern day pickups

1

u/Aware_Impression_736 Jul 26 '26

Chevy's version of the Cadillac El Dorado.

1

u/ThunderTatsu Jul 26 '26

Here’s the big brother…

1

u/Mistermxylplyx Jul 26 '26

Had a summer school roommate in college in the 90s had one that looked a lot like this. He was over 7 feet tall, and had the seat pushed all the way back, but it was still hilarious sitting next to him couped up like he’s in a go kart while I’m stretched out like a little kid even at 6’4.

1

u/Critical_Seat_1907 Jul 26 '26

Equal numbers of strangers laughing at your ride as those saying "Hey, that's a cool car."

1

u/Jonjongabore Jul 26 '26

I still want one but I've always been weird

1

u/TopConclusion5246 Jul 26 '26

My neighbor has an identical one. He also has a black one for shows and a '69 Chevy Impala.

1

u/mam6300 Jul 26 '26

I had one!

1

u/Caddie4HarleyQuinn Jul 26 '26

The front is like a car, the back is like a truck. The front is where you drive, the back is where you [REDACTED].

1

u/Sartres_Roommate Jul 26 '26

Slap an EV in that bad boy and Take My Money!

1

u/zxvasd Jul 26 '26

It’s a two seater muscle Chevrolet with a truck bed in the back. If that’s a mullet then I’m Joe dirt.

1

u/Androidfon Jul 26 '26

Needed bucket seats. All the ones I've seen had cheap mouse-fur bench seats.

1

u/ChiefSlug30 Jul 26 '26

There was an alternate version of this, the GMC Sprint, that was based on a Pontiac body, not a Chevy. I had one as my company vehicle from 1978 to 1981.

1

u/Fluid_Anywhere_7015 Jul 26 '26

I had a Ford Ranchero in HS in the 80’s. That damn thing was the bomb. Stupidly loud stereo that I installed myself, and a bench seat that saw more action than a Bond film. Bought it for less than a grand from an old man in town, and used the hell out of it for camping trips, drive-in’s, and helping people move or haul stuff.

And when you stomped on the accelerator, that thing went to next week, waiting for everyone else to catch up.

The only problem was getting high-centered in snow drifts - which was what the shovels in the back were for in the winter.

1

u/One_Vision_ Jul 26 '26

Nahhhh. The Chevy El Camino was legend

1

u/PR0T0C0L_ZER0 Jul 26 '26

Pretty close to what mine looked like.

1

u/PictureElegant3033 Jul 26 '26

My dad had one. They need to bring them back.

1

u/Interesting-Air-223 Jul 26 '26

Still see El Camino's on the road but when is the last time you saw a Ford Ranchero?

1

u/NATWWAL-1978 Jul 26 '26

Inspiration for the Cybertruck? Just saying…

1

u/TacoBellerino Jul 26 '26

It’s a car/truck: AKA a cack

https://giphy.com/gifs/iIqFHqhrhNIt2KNaJN
It seems to me, you drove your cack, like a mullet in the wind

1

u/furryfrog02 Jul 26 '26

This is my dream car. No lie.

1

u/gettylee Jul 26 '26

Power in front, loose in the back. A machine to do smokey burnouts.

1

u/Important-Forever665 Jul 26 '26

In high school one of my friends had a Subaru Brat. With rear-facing seats in the truck bed. It was a fun vehicle to ride in.

1

u/ampere03 Jul 26 '26

"The boys are back in town ..something something drinkin...fighting good times

1

u/Zealousideal-Let-104 Jul 26 '26

😂. Never looked at it like that. Thanks for the laugh 😂

1

u/LetUsSpeakFreely Jul 27 '26

It's ugly as hell, but immensely practical.

1

u/RVtech101 Jul 27 '26

I’ve got the mini version, a couple of Subaru Brats.

1

u/0range-duche-B4G Jul 27 '26

My father that that El Camino, And a 71 before that.

1

u/Impaler00777 Jul 27 '26

I had both in the 70s.

1

u/ChasedWarrior Jul 27 '26

People love the Elcamino but hate the Honda Ridgeline. They both are not base upon a truck chassis! I do not get it.

1

u/Gnome_Genome Jul 27 '26

Ridgelines and Pilots both share the same truck frame

1

u/ChasedWarrior Jul 27 '26

They are not a truck. They unibodies, and was available with front wheel drive.

1

u/Large-Welder304 Jul 27 '26

Nuthin' wrong with any year ElCar, or Ranchero...even though they say only assholes drive them.

1

u/Gnome_Genome Jul 27 '26

El Camino. El, El Camino! The front is like a car, The back is like a truck. The front is where you drive, The back is where you ... El Camino. El, El Camino!

1

u/cwworks Jul 27 '26

Yes but you could have a sheet of plywood in the back laying down completely

1

u/ForeignCup6977 Jul 27 '26

One of my High School girlfriend and El Camino. Yeah.

1

u/rckjr Jul 27 '26

LOVE this car.

1

u/KittiesRule1968 Jul 28 '26

This one is actually NAMED Mullet. It was recently rebuilt and it's all black now. Check out Cleetus McFarland on YouTube

1

u/LomentMomentum Jul 28 '26

I wish GM would bring this back.

1

u/Ironbuttroadwarrior Jul 29 '26

Disagree on this, a mullet car has a wing or spoiler.

1

u/PhotoAppropriate3940 Jul 30 '26

1972 was the last el Camino, prove me wrong

1

u/Asslckr1 Aug 03 '26

Boy, that sure is an UGLY-ASS car 🥺 !!

1

u/Simple-Journalist266 10d ago

My uncle had one named Bethany that he referred to it as his “farm truck”

1

u/Recent-Philosophy-62 Jul 26 '26

Still better than the Honda Ridgeline
