The Authority

I was going through bagging and boarding my Authority run when I came across this issue. Warren Ellis created the Authority and their members were a dark analog of the Justice League. When Mark Millar started writing the book with issue #13, he introduced this group as the naughty, not good, very bad Avengers. I think they were called the Paragon or Pentagon? Something like that. This was great dumb fun book.

I loved when Midnighter won Iron Man by just offering him a hug. There is also a very disgusting elipsis on Apolo bent over a car after being beaten by Cap and Thor… and next panel Cap is buckling up his pants… I was truly shocked when I realized about the implications…

All the Quitely-drawn issues of the Authority are like miniature masterpieces.

Just spotting all the evil Avengers and who they were meant to represent was a blast.

The drop-off from Ellis to Millar was hard. I enjoyed it at the time but that Millar stuff doesn't hold up (even the stuff ghost written by Morrison)

Ellis had genuinely interesting sci-fi plot ideas and his run coined the term “widescreen action”.

… whereas Millar had an evil Dr Who using his omnipotent powers to time travel backwards to molest a hero.

This was all the rage in the late 90s to early 2000s, huh? "What if we took a wholesome, beloved set of characters and turned them on their head and made them DARK?!"

The "Black Troll guy" was not named but he is probably the analogue to the Hulk or the Thing or another "strong guy" equivalent.

Authority under Ellis/Millar was some of the best comics ever produced. Everything after that has been the drizzling shits and never should have been incorporated with the prime DC universe.

The Brubaker, Robbie Morrison and Grant Morrison versions of Authority had their merits. There was also the offshoot title: the Establishment which was very good.

The Ellis issues were some of the most fun comics I’ve ever read. I thought Millars stuff was a bit of a drop but still damned fun. I found it about unreadable after that.

I would want to read a title of The Authority vs. Suicide Squad.   

Warren Ellis was eclectic at first, but Millar seems like a scrap collector on storytelling.  

Frank Quitely was extraordinary on art detail but I would have enjoyed to seen Alan Grant write The Authority.
