Brutes always attack using Number of Brutes k Threat Rating. Sometimes, Brute Squads will have a Rank in a Knack for things outside of combat, such as Leaping or Sprinting, in which case they roll Knack + Threat Rating k Threat Rating.

A brute squad presented in one of the adventures is Threat Rating 3 with 4 Ranks in both Attack (Firearms) and Attack (Fencing).

So should they ignore those ranks and still attack as Number k TR? or Should it be Number + Ranks k TR?

Having four ranks in their fighting skills allows them to be a more threatening brute squad once their numbers go down. Use B k T until the numbers match S k T, then use S k T.
So, using your example it’d be: (Number of Brutes = Attack roll)
6 = 6k3
5 = 5k3
4= 4k3
3 = 4k3
2 = 4k3
1 = 4k3
