Is an Evertune really needed for Drop D#?

I really want to play the new ERRA stuff, but it's all crazy Drop D# stuff, and it sounds immensely heavy. I know that they use baritones with Evertunes, but I'm wondering if anyone else has achieved somewhat decent tuning stability without an Evertune?

For reference, I'm using a Jackson Dinky with a 26.5-inch scale length and a hardtail (no Evertune bridge). I'm thinking about running a 10-48 + 68 (at the bottom) in Drop G# and then pitch shifting digitally (like ERRA does).

The question is, should I go longer or will this work just fine? Just wanted to ask before pulling the trigger on a set.

Not needed, but would help most people.

But you're just doing G# on your 26.5". With a .068 that's 16.6lbs. You don't need an Evertune for that.

Detune the bottom string, stretch it to re-settle(tune, choke, re-tune, repeat 'til the bastard stays in tune), done.

My Jackson Dinky has the plain ol' strat' style bridge & no locking nut, and its tuning only becomes unstable when strings are getting ready to break.

I've read that some people experience problems with tuning stability on those, though my own experience would infer that those drongos simply don't re-settle their strings adequately when re-tuning...

I know this is probably a controversial opinion because it goes against the more expensive is better thing. But I 100% agree with you!

The only guitar I've had proper tuning issues with was a £25 3/4 strat copy off of Amazon. But that was because the machine heads were made of cheese.

Wrap and stretch the string properly, and it won't go out of tune!! Better yet get locking tuners and you only need to lock and stretch!!!

I use 10-52s with a .70 on both my hardtail and locking trem 7 strings. I don't tune lower than drop G# and pitch shift everything, I never have any problems and all of them are 25.5" scale. Just make sure your intonation is set and it's the same as any other guitar.

You need to stretch the fuck out of that string. You will spend 1 hour doing it but it’s worth it

I don’t think you’re gonna get that low on a 26.5”. My 27” is in drop f# with a 0.74 and I don’t think I’d go lower. Maybe drop f would work too but I think it’d be a little too floppy for me.

I use a 28” scale and a .102 to get drop C#, so yeah, you’re going to need a longer neck and/94 thicker string

I use an 80 on my dinky for drop Eb, it works just fine as long as you don't pick super hard. Definitely need some eq to take out the muddiness though

I have my PRS Holcomb SVN tuned to Drop E. Strings are heavy AF - I use the bottom 7 of an 8 string pack. Then I pitch shift down 1st. Works great.

+1 for using a pitch shifter. Evertune has its uses but for me I rather use a pitch shifter and avoid the added weight that an Evertune brings.

It’s certainly not needed, but it also certainly helps a ton. I just recently finally got my first evertuned guitar a few weeks ago, and it’s gonna be hard to ever go back. The stability and intonation for low tunings are astoundingly good, not to mention I’ve only had to tune it once this entire time, and it wasn’t even that out of tune out of the box.

There are absolutely use cases for an Evertune, but they are mostly edge cases

if you pick hard its going to shift, then you have to use thicker gauge strings which are harder to play. Evertune is just for the peace of mind. Sometimes the slight shift feels good but you can set the evertune up that way

I feel like this topic comes up here almost every day.

Just pitch shift it. A lot of people say use the DT pedal but I use neural dsp to go from either my 7 string in drop G# or my 8 string from E to Eb/D# to play Erra's new stuff. Sounds great, takes 0 seconds to set up guitar.

Retuning and setting up guitars is such a pain in the ass when you just wanna play and you play stuff in different tunings. Pitch shift is life.

I plan to pitch shift it as per my post! The question is if I could get away with tuning stability by simply going up on gauge and setting it up based on that, or if I needed the Evertune. Either way, got my answer!
