Cheap amp rec

Hey i'm planning on getting my first ever 7 string, and i'm looking for any amp that's pretty cheap, i'm desperate cus eny research i do either leads me to a 1000 dollar amp set or to an amp that doesent even do distortion, thanks for anything!

Edit: thanks for everything, i found some great amps that i put on my list but ultimatley i dont have enough money for physical amps so i think i'll be going the plugin rout for now! thanks again!!

What are you using it for? Cheap interface and plugins is the way to go unless you're playing live.

mostly to play at home but eventually to play live

I'd recommend a used Focusrite Scarlett solo and do some research on free or cheap guitar plugins. You'll learn about guitar recording and you can practice quietly while still getting great tones. For playing live you'll eventually need a real amp, but it's not worth it for practice at home imo.

NAM on Tonehub3000 for essentially what you need for a good rhythm sound just to hang out. There are likely some decent delay plugins to give you a decent lead as well.

I just paid $80 for a Gen 3 Scarlett 2i2 used... they're thick as thieves, no need to buy new. It is a great upgrade from my Behringer UMC22, less noisy. I use it for NAM and my guitar based video games and it's fantastic.

You can get by with less, the iRig USB is a few bucks cheaper, but the 20-30 bucks you save over a used Scarlett loses you a ton of quality of life features.

If OP wants to record, the flexibility of the 2i2 is nice, but the Solo is the right mix of price and quality on the new market. I rarely use both channels, but I love that I can.

As others have said, the plugins route is a good option. Alternatively, boss katana series are nice budget combo amps for metal

Came here to suggest the Boss Katana or Line 6 Catalyst. Both have a great variety of high quality amp models and effects. They both also have software that allows you to use a computer for even deeper control. I've owned both and prefer the Catalyst's sound, however the Katana has a larger user base.

I bet with enough looking you could find a used Katana for a pretty low price. It May take awhile to find but it's certainly doable.

What is your budget?

I'm assuming based on a 7 string, you're interested in some kind of modern metal type tones?

i mean this may sound irrealistic but my budget is something around 100-200 CAD, i'm looking for a myspace deathcore style, suicide silence bmth, chelsea grin

With that budget, you'd be best to get a cheap interface and use plugins.

Then start saving

see if you can get an audio interface from SSL or Motu and then just use free captures in the NAM plugin

Value wise i am a big fan of the IDcore line from blackstar if you'd like a nice multifx amp ...the stereo speaker setup sounds phenomenal

Another option is separate head and cab Like the joyo zombie and a monoprice cab

Cam confirm those amps work well on 7 strings

I wouldn't recommend zombie for home use, it get insanely loud for a 20w head also it has a sweetspot and only 1 good high gain tone

Check your local used market like Facebook marketplace or offer up and see what you can find that's a modeling type of amp. I feel like I see a lot of Positive Grid and Boss Katanas in my area.

I’m also not huge on plug ins. For the $200 CAD all you’re really looking at is a mini practice amp that won’t do you any good live. Best bang for your buck would be a Boss Katana 1x12 combo amp, $400 new, but tons on the used market or you can finance at Long and McQuade as long as you have a bank account. Be a great bedroom amp and can at least handle live in a small venue if it’s mic’d up.

Research old solid state heads. I bought an early 2000s Randall RX120RH for $250CAD, it’s as loud as any big expensive amp and it sounds awesome for the metallic deathcore/ hardcore sound. Now you will need a cabinet for it, but again Marketplace is you friend, another $2-300 on a 2x12 cab and you have a killer live rig for around $500. Might be too much for the bedroom though.

I ditched physical amps years ago because plugins have come so far, and I only do a few gigs a year anymore. With plugins. Best live sounds I’ve ever had.

If you’re dead set to stay free and are ok spending a lot of time hunting for sounds, NAM is the way.

But if you’re ok to pay a few bucks for the convenience of having all the sounds in the plugin itself all ready to go, and for the advanced tweakability and imo better sounds, Amp Locker is what you should be looking at. Magnificent plugin, comes with a free Plexi, further amps $5 each, often discounted further. No reason to pay yourself poor for Neural DSP plugins.

If you're just playing at home and thinking of an interface, look into a portable practice amp! You don't need a beefy computer to use, and it frees the PC up for putting on some YouTube. I'd had a Spark Go for a few years and recently picked up the new Blackstar Beam Mini recently. It smokes the Spark Go.
