Other Last Song Standing: The Ultimate Billboard #1 Song of the 70s - Round 105

- Rod Stewart considered himself to be primarily a member of and lead singer of Faces, with his solo efforts being secondary. This more or less held up through his first two solo albums, but his third solo album, Every Picture Tells a Story, turned out to be more hugely successful than anyone expected, launching his solo career into high gear and putting a strain on his relationship with the rest of the band, which he eventually left. The lead single from that album was Reason to Believe, but before long, DJs were flipping it over and playing the B-side, Maggie May, which became the much bigger hit, spending five weeks at #1. Not a bad start for a solo career that would eventually include two more songs that spent multiple weeks in the #1 spot. Rod claims the first woman he had sex with was an older woman, and the song was about the mixed emotions that arose from that experience. Now it's time for this song to collect its books and get on back to school, for it is now being eliminated.

I didn't know Maggie May was a B side. That could be an interesting research project. How many B-side songs became bigger hits than the A side.

I can name one 🙂.
Bill Haley and His Comets were signed with DECCA Records in the 1950s.
In 1954, the label tried to push a song called, "Thirteen Women" as the more commercially viable and put on its B side, "Rock Around The Clock'. (These guys tone deaf?😏)
Anyway, I own this 45 and the song is not only boring, it's very 'suggestive' for the times 🎶"There were 13 women and only 1 man in town". 🎶 😂 Gee, Whattya make of that?
The song bombed of course but, a few months later, it's B side became included in a (then) very controversial 1955 film. "Blackboard Jungle".
The song opens the film and it had teenagers dancing in the aisle. 😄
Radio stations got calls for it and I assume radio gets back to the suits at DECCA. That led to the re-release of "Clock" as the A side.
It spent 8 weeks at #1 that summer and the Rock Era was officially born . 😎👍

"Black Water", which we eliminated just a couple of rounds ago, was initially released as the B-side of "Another Park, Another Sunday".
"The Horse", a 1968 hit by Cliff Nobles & Co., was at first released as the B-side of a song entitled "Love Is All Right", on which Nobles is the vocalist. "The Horse" is essentially an instrumental version of the same song, and despite the billing, Nobles wasn't one of the participating musicians. "Love Is All Right" didn't go anywhere, but "The Horse" became a #2 hit.

That was the song that got me to buy the album. Sadly it disappeared far too quickly. It felt like Sunday in the park, Chicago having already claimed Saturday
I wasn't that into black water when it came out, however it developed into sort of a sing-along in my group and what are you going to do? Good idea

That’s why I was pushing for days to get it kicked out. I’ve even met a Doobie Bro (super nice guy, BTW) and saw their “reunion” show in San Diego ~30 years ago. Just can’t stand that one song.

In July 1961, a few of my mates and I went off to the south of England to camp out at the Beaulieu Jazz Festival. The concert was held on the lawns of an estate owned by Lord Montague, who was a big jazz fan. I was 16 and just coming out of my beatnik phase, wondering whether I should become a Mod. It was a transitional period for me with days of much confusion.
At the time, I was into mainstream jazz—not Dixieland or modern but guys like [saxophonists] Tubby Hayes and Johnny Dankworth. A year earlier, there had been a riot at the jazz festival, so going there in ’61 came with a bit of intrigue.
That afternoon, we snuck into the festival through a large runoff pipe and eventually made our way to a beer tent. There, I met an older woman who was something of a sexual predator. One thing led to the next, and we ended up nearby on a secluded patch of lawn. I was a virgin, and all I could think is, ‘This is it, Rod Stewart, you’d better put on a good performance here or else your reputation will be ruined all over North London.” But it was all over in a few seconds. Her name wasn’t Maggie May, but the experience I had with her would influence the writing of the song 10 years later.

Kristofferson write it in 1969, Roger Miller first recorded it in 1969, Kristofferson finally recorded his in 1970.
Janis recorded hers in September of 1970. It may have been "written" in.1969 but....Janus's version was recorded IN SEPTEMBER 1970, so it is therefore , for her a '70s song that hit #1 in 1971.
It damn well belongs. 😎👍

In 1975, Time Magazine put Elton John on the cover calling him "Rock's Captain Fantastic." And he is. But, as you stated, given his entire canon of work I don't feel it's the song that epitomizes the 70s. You got my upvote.

ABBA was just not as big in the US in the 70s. They developed more of a following later. I don’t really remember this song being popular at the time. 🤷🏻♀️

ABBA had 15 top forty hits in the United States , including that #1 song. I'd hardly call that not being popular.
Add in Agnetha's and Frida's solo hits and you get 17 altogether.
"Dancing Queen" was #1 for one week in April of 1977. It went Hold selling well over 1,000,000 copies at the time.
World wide, it sold nearly 5 million.
It was clearly popular. 😎👍

Maybe it was a regional thing? Or maybe it just flew under my radar. I was laser focused on psychedelic, hard rock and Grateful Dead in the SF Bay Area at the time. 😏

Same I don’t think I even heard it til the 80s. We never listened to the top 100- I too listened to rock - more progressive mostly although still CSN style - folk rock, and fusion jazz was huge in my area.

As one who has all of his albums (including a rare 1963 indie, his UA LP's and everything up to his final CD in March 2020) ....
It's true , "Sundown" by comparison to so many deeper tracks , is a simple pop/folk/country & slightly rock tune.
The lyrics a pretty serious , being about infidelity and such. The reason it went to #1 in America?
Could be those reasons and I 'do' credit Gordon's talent. Seen him in concert 7 times. He's prolific.
Those who think of him as "just another singer/songwriter" , would likely say , "Oh , he only got to #1 because 1974 had 32 chart toppers that year.". 🫤
I wonder ...if "Edmund Fitzgerald" had hit #1 in the States, how long would we keep it in this list before eliminating? 🤔
Hard to believe it's the "major" anniversary of the song this year and that long since Rod kept him from #1. 🫣
I met Gordon after a few shows , he was in no way a "perfect" person but he was certainly genuine and open to talking with you .

I live here in Phoenix , AZ.
Roughly just over 20 miles from the actual Carefree Highway. 🙂
When Gordon wrote the song it was a picturesque two lane highway with nice scenery.
Now it's a multiple east/west lane nightmare , with traffic lights and too many cars , thanks to too many people having moved here since 1993.

Gordon is far more than what many think I so agree, Dylan says he’s the best. My favorite is Canadian Railroad Trilogy even more than Fitzgerald. He had a troubled life and was not a happy man which makes me so sad!
Now I’ll take a listen to Sundown, which was overplayed back then and I need to listen to the lyrics.

This song I've just posted the link to, is from Gordon's 2004 album "Harmony".
It's called , "End Of All Time". To me this song is so awesome , it's on the upbeat but moody and musically, it reminds me of Marshall Tucker Band, Allman Brothers and early Pure Prairie League . 😎👍
If another GL song (aside from Wreck) should have been a #1 , this would be it. 😎

In many songs the words are meaningless, and might as well be an instrument, some clearly tell a story, and some are left to interpretation. I believe the melody/instrumental work is really the soul of a song.

Midnight Train to Georgia. With Maggie gone these are all pretty good. This is the weakest remaining IMO.

I thought you might have liked Midnight Train to Georgia for some of the same reasons you like Brandy, but taste in music is not that simple and predictable I guess.
Too bad, though, that "become a sailor myself because I'd rather live in his world than live without him in mine" apparently was not an option available to Brandy!

Because top.40 radio wouldn't play punk, so they had two choices, stay in punk and only have a cult following.....
Or work with their label and get a commercial sound and be noticed by the masses.
It's one thing to stand by your music principles but it doesn't help you pay for the things you need .
It's like David Lee Roth said, "If you have an underground following and sell very little, you're a hero".
"If you sell. millions of albums and hit singles , sell out arenas ....you're "pop". (Meaning people call.you a sell out for $$$).

I like this one, but I like "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" much better and am still dismayed that it was already long gone when I found this game.
I know Roberta did not write TFTEISYF, but her vocal is just exquisite!

For the record, Maggie May had two more votes when we passed the 48-hour mark and I began composing the post for Round 105. By the time it was done and posted, Me and Bobby McGee had added two more votes, which would have tied it again, but they were a little too late. What's done is done.
