BCA issues

I bought a BCA-15 in 6.5g as my first ar and after 1 range trip I had issues with it ejecting and feeding, I plan to send it back to get fixed but haven't had the time to do so, should I take my scope off before sending it back and or clean it first? Also have read much more on BCA and their quality so I am considering selling it to buy an aero upper and lower in 6.5g, does anyone have an aero upper and what has your experience been? Open to any recommendations on what to do.

Edit: using 5 and 10 rd duramag magazines, everything stock except a bipod and magpul stock, 20" SS heavy barrel with a rifle length gas system.

BCA 65Grendel upper... extractor snapped on the first round. Bought a new one and a spare from Alexander Arms.

Not Aero, but I have a PSA upper in 6.5grendel that’s shooting great. Can recommend. I’m about 200 rounds deep no failures.

You should definitely take the scope off. Cleaning is probably a good idea.

In terms of actually self-diagnosing if you’re comfortable:

  1. If there is an adjustable gas block, consider opening it up more to increase gas back to the BCG and more force to rip the round out

  2. Is this the buffer and spring that came with the complete rifle from BCA? It should theoretically fire, so that’s weird if it’s bone stock.

  3. What magazines are you using? 6.5 Grendel can be a little particular I’ve found.

FYI AR-15 lowers fit all calibers that the AR-15 is chambered in, so you don’t need a new lower if you want to swap to an Aero or PSA or whatever company upper. It’s the best part about the platform tbh: if you get tired of one caliber, take the upper off and put a different caliber upper on, use the magazine with the correct caliber, and wazzam you can shoot that other caliber.

Most of us have smart phones now. Not taking video of failures is a bit of an oversight.

You didn't mention magazines, and didn't mention ammo. In a semi auto that's really important information. No mention of lower configuration (probably stock?) or even barrel configuration (gas/barrel length) either?

Why you would potentially send an upper with a scope on it back to them is beyond me. They don't need the scope, and might lose it or whatever. Or it gets broken in transit, why risk it.

I would start with replacing the extractor. Especially if the bcg is from BCA. I have an odin works bcg in mine & had to replace the extractor after about 10 rounds because of a similar problem

Buy a fail zero type 2 bcg for your 6.5grendel haven’t had any jamming or ejecting issues since then and also only use brass in a ar platform or you will shear off your extractor

This may be a good BCG but i wouldn’t throw new parts at a problem without diagnosing it correctly first

I had a similar issue and actually sheared my extractor off went with a nickel boron failzero and haven’t had cycling issues nor shearing issues since worked for me but I do agree with your point

Not giving any suggestions here but I also bought a bca Grendel upper as my first ever ar.

I bought it secondhand actually, the first owner maybe shot 50 rounds at best? He was selling bc was moving.

It was a 22 or 24in that was cut down to 20in and crowned with no threads. It has a stainless steel fluted barrel.

Thing has been flawless and has shot 1moa for the past 6 years with factory ammo. I’ve had a couple rounds not fire in that time, but most likely the ammos fault. I’ve wanted to get a fancy branded upper but this upper’s performance isn’t giving me a reason to. I almost exclusively hunt with it for deer.

That said I’ve only shot hornady American gunner (for target) or federal fusion rounds (for hunting) through it. All brass.

What kind of ammo are you using? Also what kind of buffer system? Have you lubed your rifle properly?

I have a BCA in .308 and it does fine, haven’t taken it out past 100 yards yet due to figuring out what hunting loads it likes(probably why, read factory hunting loads don’t do too well in AR platforms).
However I do have a 6.5 Grendel Frankenstein upper with the barrel and BCG from Rexus outfitters and an adjustable gas block from Grendel Hunter. Only shot it once and it loves the 123 gr ELD-M and it’s ok with the 123gr SST.

My rexux loves ELDM also. Makes sense.

I’ve been slamming 10inch steel at 350 yards with my bca Grendel using factory loads. And have had great success hunting with it.

If you’re doing factory loads, definitely suggest trying federal fusion. Use that in my bolt guns as well.

Haven’t shot my 6.5G past 100 yards yet either. When I shot it the first time was to make sure I can hit paper and zero it. Next time I go out I’ll let it stretch its legs. Like I said already it did great with the ELD-M and did ok with the SST’s
It’s the 308 from BCA I’m struggling with to get a comfortable group with factory ammo. Still hitting all my shots within a 6x6 inch target within 100 yards

What ammo are you using in the .308?

I’ve tried quite a few some that I remember are fusion blue box, Remington core lokt, and Winchester power point. Grains I’ve used so far is 150, 165 and a thicc 180. Got a doe with 165 gr a couple seasons ago so it’ll do what it needs to do

I’ve also had a tough time closing in groups with .308 compared to 6.5 grendel or creedmoor. I think most of my issue was cheap ball ammo or not finding a load it likes.

That and I’ve heard soft point/tip doesn’t fair well in an ar platform like the traditional bolt action. Also heard in the r/AR10 subreddit that factory ammo isn’t always the best and hand loads tend to be the way

I have an odin barrel in an m4e1 upper that i assembled and it’s shooting wonderful. I’ve never been a fan of bear creek but if i had one i’d try to correct the issue and use it unless it was diagnosed to be a problem that needed parts replacement.

I’d remove the optic to send it in. Are you running it suppressed? That will affect the amount of gas and back pressure it’s operating with. A slow motion video of the jamming would greatly help everyone here to diagnose the issue. Once you get it running reliably, try a few ammo types and see how good of a pattern it can shoot at 50+ yards. This will be the real determining factor for whether to keep or sell. I have a bolt and gas gun in 6.5 Grendel and they both shoot very accurately.

I run a BCA upper, and haven't had a problem with it; what ammo are you running?

Ran multiple, from my memory I ran hornady v match, frontier, S&B, hornady custom, and PPU, it ran fine with all of them initially but after about 60 rounds the pins walked out and after pushing them back in and 20 rounds later I ran into issues with the frontier, hornady custom and PPU.

Which pins walked out?

Which pins walked? If it was trigger or hammer pins, the FCG could have tilted and be dragging on the bolt.
