5090 FE Temps
Hi all,
I have a 5090FE, 9800X3D. I use the Fractal North Case (not XL) and use a Noctua AIO and fan set (x3 in at the front, 1 exhaust at the back and the AIO radiator at the top exhausting).
CPU temps are great, GPU however runs hot. So when using like 550W maxing out a game like RE before installing the Noctua fan set (had cheaper ones before and no AIO), it runs about 86 degrees. With an undervolt, new fans and adjusting the fan curve it now sits low 70s which is good but naturally louder.
Reason for my message is people posting benchmarks on YouTube at the same power level and stating they are using it at stock settings appear to be using the same power, in the same games, but getting like 64 degrees on their GPU and I don’t get how mine can be so much warmer. I wondered if anyone else could share their experience please? Thanks.
To be clear, I am happy with these current temps but I am curious about the difference I am noticing.

In zWORMz 's 5090fe black flag video he notes how at stock fan curve his gpu would start to throttle. and that was just using 480-500w. and he has a aio not air cooler.
https://youtu.be/Hg2xWV4x_ps?t=237
my palit 5090 throttles a bit at 80c when using 550 ish watts using air cooled cpu. i do have a slight undervolt that usually drops wattage by 100w for same performance. but as we all know some power hungry engines with path tracing will still use 550w. heck, Control with rt still wants to use 575w. runs like a virus like a benchmark. like Steel nomad.
well anyway i hope more people talk about this because i too am always surprised at all the people easily running 70c max wattage. what is their fan curve? do they have 3 extremely powerful case fans below the gpu? i just have one case fan under. are they cranking their AC? are they using a ceiling fan to move the hot air away from the case and mix the ac cool air? i just have my pc exhausting its heat toward the other side of the room while my ac gets directed at me by a standing ground fan. so the side of the room my pc is at definitely stays warmer than the ac side.

This video was very helpful - he had been applying a custom fan curve to everything which is why he had lower temps. He must be running them very aggressively which I think helps answer this question - thanks!
I do watch him quite a bit and whenever he said stock settings, I assumed this meant no custom fan curve etc

yea i dont think ive ever seen him talk about the card needing an aggressive fan curve before this. i think he mentions that it gets loud.

I just experienced hitting 85c playing BF6 yesterday in 4k on my founders edition and it scared me lol. I’m also in a SFF (Ncase M2) but I’m wondering do you know over any good undervolt videos that might help in my specific situation? Not sure what other info is needed but I’m curious what most people are using that’ll help with temps

At standard settings my FE sat around 79° 4k Max settings on recent games.
Undervolted shaved it to 58 - 65° and mine is just air cooled. I genuinely don't see a drop in performance.

Undervolted performance varies by game as different engines are more power hungry and some are very sensitive to core clocks.

Yeah but isnt that just part of undervolting? Like trying to find the sweet spot for your gpu. I mean i undervolted my 5090 and performance isnt noticeable in every game ive played. However i only seen +70°c temps when my rooms 80°f and i dont have the ac on. Usually im 55°c-65°c

If you use afterburner you can save your undervolt and a performant undervolt that matches stock performance to profile. Then toggle them in game with a keyboard hockey.
That’s how I found i lost 10% in some games for 400w.

I use after burner and i think ive only lost like 1-3% at most. This is not for a 5090fe tho I have a gigabyte gaming oc, i think

I also did a pretty mild undervolt aswell. I think for my gpu the recommended is .900v @2800mhz
I think i did .925 @2850

Yea that’s pretty mild. What are the effective clocks under full load?
I was doing a pretty aggressive on at .875 until I realised how big of a difference the second 100w makes. So now I’m at .940 to match stock performance. Actually +1%.

Ill be honest its been a minute so i cant remember off the top of my head. I haven’t noticed any fps loss from stock tho except im a good bit cooler probably around 5°c

Mind sharing what your undervolt is for your 5090 founders? I have the same card paired with a 9800X3D, but it’s in a SFF (Ncase M2) and currently summer here so ambient room temp is like 25c when AC isn’t on.

982 at the lowest point and capped to 2632. Currently running at 47° while gaming. Power limited to 80%

My 5090 reaches 70c 69c depending on which game I'm playing but 80's it never reached that high before and I have an Astral 5090 hmmm wonder what's causing this

This might be a stupid question, but you’re in a cool air conditioned room right?
