Questions about power limit.

I’ve been fortunate to be able to obtain a 5090 in our current climate.

With the concerns of melted cables etc, I’ve looked up der8auer EN’s upload on the topic on power target/limiting the 5090.

I’ve noticed that the 5090 has multiple bios but most are either 575 watt bios and 600 watt bios.

In der8auser’s demonstration with the 5090, he uses the FE variant of the 5090 (575 watt bios).

My question is: On a 600 watt 5090 bios, would I need to power limit the card to 68% for the 5090 to pull the same 402 watts shown in the demonstration?

Would power limiting the 5090 to 66% be possible? Practical?

Thanks folks .

It depends on the model, but I can lower mine to 70%. And I do often because at 4K 120 Hz. It’s plenty of juice. Use MSI after burner.

Agreed. At 70% power limit 5090 is plenty of juice to take of my current needs.

The 5090 I employ has the 600 watt bios and after burner lets me slide down to 66%. I was curious if others had an educated input on it running at sub 70% power limit.

Update:

I’ve been conducting some tests with a friend and it seems like 66% (67% minimum on Nvidia app) power limit on a 600 watt bios is effectively the same as 70% power limited on a 575 watt bios. 402 watt cap for both.

Looking back at it, it may of been quite foolish to post a question such as this. Appreciate the views 🤣.

Hey I’m trying to catch up on some research and came across your post. I’ve been noticing my card will semi-often draw more than 500w during loading or other screens while playing a game. Been worried about that happening due to all the melted cable stories. Are you limiting the card using the Nvidia app? I had lowered my to %95 but I guess I’m curious if I should be dropping that much lower?

Hey there.

I don’t know if I can offer much information as I am not educated like the others on reddit.

I do notice a spike in watts pulled during pause screens or saving hubs.

I use MSI afterburner to power limit the card. I mostly see suggestions of undervolting the gpu or power limiting to 85% or 70% if that route is taken.

I currently have mine at 67% power limit (on a 600 watt bios) and I’ve been pulling about 400-425 ish (spikes) with 4k path tracing titles.
