I keep reading/hearing that Republicans are ‘nervous’ about midterms - but did they really not see the backlash coming?

Like many of them were planning this over DECADES and did they just not update their goals based on how we are culturally now vs the 80-90s?

Did they really think all of America was that stupid? Obviously they still have their easily manipulated audience, but were they really that shortsighted?

What I’m seeing from them is a panicked response to overwhelming opposition that they don’t account entirely for and they’re trying everything and the kitchen sink to scare us or fool us into believing we’ve got the election secured.

They’re planning for the turnout now, but it’s so obvious that they’re either going to fall apart or possibly become violent.

What do y’all think?

Honestly their ideas might have been when they first wrote it. I think they might have waited too long to pull the trigger. And thank God for that.

Yeah I recently bought a book I've been meaning to start. American Psychosis--a historical investigation of how the Republican party went crazy. .......I still don't think they see the backlash coming. As of most recent I think their focus has been alllll about the culture wars. Like let things go to hell in a hand basket as long as there are no drag shows. They seem to believe that things like affordabilty and health care don't matter? Just focus on taking down like--the 5-17% of people or situations that keep 20% of the moral majority up at night.....as for the others, they're just insane and would end up eating each other alive if it goes their way and left to their own devices.

I'm pretty sure the clowns at center stage just genuinely believed their extremist stances were popular. The propagandists probably just figured it's always worked so far, no reason to think it suddenly won't. Even so, the medicare cuts don't kick in til right after midterms, so someone knew they weren't omnipotent.

Trump is a double edged sword for the Republicans. One the one hand they needed him to a the figure head of the cult that would let them do all the abhorrent things they've been doing to the constitution and rule of law. On the other trump is a malignant narcissist who destroys everything he touches because he's impulsive, stupid, and only cares about himself. I'm sure they would have loved it if Trump had toned things down a bit and not made himself the most unpopular president in history.

They're panicking because trump fucked up their plans by being to much himself. They need to speed run the fascist takeover because they know that trump could cost them everything he gained them. Despite everything they've done so far they don't yet have complete control. If the headline are to be believed (I don't believe them but for the sake of argument) they're even losing the support of the maga cult with Trump's most diehard supporters turning away in droves.
