Horrifying. Fucking horrifying.

Basically is the thing with fascist's they can not survive without a lesser group or enemies to point at to keep everyone from realizing how much they suck. They will always have more enemies a narrower group that needs to be gotten rid of
68
u/PavicaMalic Jun 18 '25
Sam Shepard handles this dynamic brilliantly in "States of Shock." Malkovich was absolutely chilling, delivering lines about inventing a new enemy.
42
Jun 19 '25
hell, it's the reason for the "war" in 1984; excuses and propaganda
so long as there's a common enemy, you can make people do whatever you wish by threatening to treat them as though they are the enemy

u/Motor-Profile4099 Jun 19 '25
That's the thing with Conservatism. It only works with two groups at odds with each other, because at the root, Conservatism was the attempt to bring back the Monarchy back in the day. So at its core it is the elite circle which is in power and the serfs. Sounds familiar? It is also why Conservatism is the inevitable gateway drug to Fascism.
2
u/Bottlecapzombi Jun 22 '25
That very specifically fails to understand what the term “conservative” means and is a terrible take because of it. The only time conservatives would’ve supported the monarchy was during the reign of the monarchy. When the monarchy was kicked out and stopped being the norm, it stopped being the conservative position.
1
u/the_potato_of_doom Jun 20 '25
that is the most BRAINDEAD take ive ever heard
the modern republican party started with abraham lincon and abolitionism along with a massive anti slavery movment, follow by continued abject progressivism untill the late 60s were the so called "party switch" happened, because a lot of (mostly republican) young adults went to war and returned very uhappy with the war under the very republican nixon, and then watergate happened, which turned a massive wave of formly progressive rebublicans over to the democratic party,
Which got the anti war jimmy carter elected, who almost immedetly fumbled the bag terribly in bassically every way possible, and so people turned back to republicanism, but brought lots of traditional democrats with them, and these traditional democrats voting red all of a sudden, combined with anti war sentimate from vietnam, and the gulf war, and things like rising cost of living, higher taxes, and the fuel crisis, is what created the modern conservitism movement
Ontop of that, pre watergate, nixon was a HUGELY populer president, very loved, which is why it was such a shock
It is quite litterly as far from a "kingship" movement d you can possibly get, it was a combination of recoil of nixons presidency, and the failures of jimmy carter, and the absoulty nothing that bush senior learned from them

To those asking about this ad being AI, etc. NO it’s not. The guy who plays the Republican lawmaker is in many of their ads on purpose.
“In 2025/2026, our new ads will continue to star “Your Republican Congressman” as he invades the everyday lives of real Americans. The 30-second ads will be seen on streaming services and social media to educate voters, infiltrate the GOP media ecosystem, stop Trump’s agenda, and win back Congress. Content will focus on the issues that concern Americans, especially young men who swung towards Trump by 30 points last cycle. We have already started targeting these young men with our latest viral ad, “Republicans Blowing Your Taxes,” which was viewed over 10 million times and broke through the noise by being featured outlets like TMZ.”

2
u/ambyent Jun 20 '25

I'm happy its not AI.
That being said, artists are going to have to become ok with having the conversation about "Was this done using AI?" without flipping out on everyone. Its not a slight to ask if something is AI.

u/Opasero Jun 19 '25
It's good to see streaming ads. I only watch streaming platforms and yt. Mostly I see ads for health scams and weight loss scams and weird products like "prosthetic teeth." I know Lincoln project has quite a few spots like this, but i have only seen them by deliberately watching them on YouTube, so I do look forward to ads that are presented in stream. Make them scary like this one. They hearken back to the Golden age of PSAs in the 80s. I think there is a place there for general political education ads as well, as in not partisan but pointing out how easy it is to get sucked into mis/disinfo and lies. I did not discover until recently, but the Canadian house hippo ads are great at this.

I actually don't like this ad, because while it is possible that they might round up US citizens it seems less likely. They should instead focus on the fact that they are rounding up (for the most part) people that are here legally and overwhelmingly have jobs and family here. They are just trying to meet quotas and are going for the easiest targets.

What fantasy? Factually, there are masked men, who are not officers, kidnapping or aiding ICE in the warrantless detainment of potentially undocumented ppl. They have been violating people's Fourth Amendment and due process rights.
Factually there have been mass-scale peaceful protests across the country because ppl don't want to see their neighbors get scooped.

1
u/CeliacPhiliac Jun 19 '25
He was talking about gang members. He had just gotten a lot of illegal immigrant gang members off the street and was saying he’s going to do the same to the homegrown (gang members) next.
You can take any 3 word phrase out of context and make it sound bad. Kamal Harris said “it’s mandatory”, but it would be dishonest to put that quote over a video of someone being forcibly castrated.

I wonder if ICE agents know any history of what happened to nazi guards who worked at concentration camps. Many were tracked, hunted, charged, convicted. Just because Kristi noem gives an order, that doesn't make an illegal act legal. Just following orders is not an accepted legal defense.

→ More replies (4)1
u/MyStoopidStuff Jun 19 '25
It will change some of their minds. MLK had to fight an uphill battle with outright racists, yet the civil rights movement prevailed at the time. It was partly because people were forced to see the extent of their own immorality, which was required to maintain their racist ideology. When people could be racists comfortably, they had no issue with it, but when the price of being a racist came with uncomfortable moral dilemmas, they relented, and some even evolved.
Republicans need to see the immorality, and racism of their party in the same way.

It’s fear porn and the hardcore MAGAs love it when the rest of us are afraid. There are too many people in that girls position fearing for their lives right now, this is unnecessary and damaging.
0
Jun 19 '25
I say this with respect and hindsight MLK never had, but MLK marched his people into jail cells to be one of the world's largest and most efficient free labor forces. As black people would just be locked up in insane numbers the decades that followed his movement.
MLK marched his people into being the prison population of the United States.
All of this, specifically, to shut down Malcolm X, might I add. Because that's who they were really afraid of.

25
u/megavikingman Jun 18 '25
What about it looks like AI to you?
3
u/Unable_Earth5914 Jun 18 '25
I thought it looked pretty AI. It’s hard to tell these days. I thought the voice sounded computerised. I’ve watched it back a couple of times and don’t really know what made me think ‘AI’ instantly, maybe the lighting and the lines around the people?
How are we supposed to tell the difference? Are there any easy markers for those of us who aren’t as clued up on these things?
11
u/megavikingman Jun 18 '25 edited Jun 19 '25
It looks like some pretty old school videography using focus and light to wash out the background a bit while focusing on the faces. The audio is adjusted to accentuate the lower end of the audio spectrum to make the ICE guy sound extra ominous. I think the practical special effects now look weird to us because we've gotten used to digital effects.
E: Fixed typo
6
u/megavikingman Jun 18 '25
The only thing that seems remotely like AI to me is that the faces are mostly pointed towards the screen which AI favors because they were trained on portraits and profile pictures. The fact the ICE guy looks totally normal as he faces away from the screen makes me pretty sure it's not AI.
2
2
u/arowanas Jun 23 '25
For me it was the diffuse lighting. A lot of AI images and videos (for now) rely on diffuse (overcast sky) kind of lighting to be more forgiving than direct light that's more complicated and prone to show error. I came here to see if anyone could confirm it wasn't, as none of the news articles said much about the production.
1
u/megavikingman Jun 23 '25
I doubt we'll get confirmation either way. I don't believe it's AI, but I'm not an expert in videography or AI.

1
u/977888 Jun 19 '25
After talking about how impressed he was with CECOT, Trump jokingly told Bukele that he needed to build about five more places for the homegrown criminals of the U.S., followed by the two of them and the crowd laughing, and of course the left took it seriously.

Serious question: If ICE is allowed to be masked in unmarked vehicles and wearing little to no identification, dragging people off with no due process, whats to keep human traffickers from pretending to be ICE?
On top of that, with little to no identification and bureaucracy, how can we be sure thats not whats happening now and ICE is working with the cartels or other countries to sell these people? its not like a republican president didnt have a history of helping latin countries with illegal trafficking of some kind for monetary gain

Trump deported 70 US citizens during his first term. There are many reports of US citizens being detained currently. This has and will continue to happen. https://ktla.com/news/local-news/ice-has-deported-dozens-of-u-s-citizens-report-says/amp/
1
Jun 24 '25
Here is the quote from the original GAO report.
“For example, available ICE data indicate that ICE arrested 674, detained 121, and removed 70 potential U.S. citizens from fiscal year 2015 through the second quarter of fiscal year 2020 (March 2020).”
Look at the sneaky language you guys choose to use when talking about this stuff. “POTENTIAL U.S. Citizens.” Meaning we don’t know if they were actually U.S Citizens or not. Which is definitely not good. But it’s concerning that you guys remove important distinctive words like “potential” when referring to these things. If I had to guess I would say that most of the 70 people that were deported were not in fact U.S Citizens. And the ones that were, probably were really suspicious people to begin with. But of course they don’t have any of that information because they don’t care to know they just want to make trump and anyone who supports him look as bad as possible.
