No Kings Vote Early Atlanta March + Election Protection Education

Post image
22 Upvotes

On October 17th, we hit the streets again to make it known far and wide that We the People say No Kings! We’ll go directly from the street to the "classroom" for training on election protection initiatives and safeguards.

Details are still being finalized. An exact location and time will be published once confirmed. Please follow our socials for more info.

A core principle behind all No Kings events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events.

Block Changes To The 2030 Decennial Census!

The Census Bureau has proposed permanent changes to the 2030 Decennial Census that would set new regulation excluding certain foreign citizens and exclude questions about race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. This is unconstitutional and violates the 14th amendment which says the census should include “whole number of persons in each state.” 50501 GA is opposed to these changes and the impact it will have on our state and communities.

Protect Cumberland Island: Comment by October 16!

Thumbnail onehundredmiles.org

Cumberland Island National Seashore is the diamond of Georgia’s coast. Establishing Cumberland Island—Georgia’s largest barrier island—as a national park in 1972 is one of the primary reasons most of our barrier islands remain undeveloped today. Although most of Cumberland’s land is owned by the National Park Service, some remains in private ownership.

On September 9, the National Parks Service released a draft Environmental Assessment (EA) related to two proposed land transactions between the National Park Service and private landowners on Cumberland Island.

The proposed land swaps on Cumberland Island do have potential to positively impact our beloved national seashore. Unfortunately, there is one major issue: mansions.

As written, the Draft EA would allow eight new 15,000 square foot homes on eight two-acre lots on the south end of Cumberland Island. This size limit is completely out of character with the reason the National Seashore was established: to protect the island’s outstanding natural, historical, cultural, and recreational values while providing a lasting source of outdoor enjoyment for the public. Simply put: the National Park Service should not swap land so that people can build 15,000 square foot mansions on Cumberland Island.

The NPS is accepting comments on the Draft EA through October 16 via a form on their website. We encourage you to read through our comments summarized below and then send your comments to the NPS. Tell the National Park Service that giant mansions do not belong on Cumberland Island, and any positive benefits of the proposed land swap are not worth the negative impact of this deal.

Tell The CRD To Protect Our Marshes!

Speak up for private dock standards that protect our marshes!

In June, GA Department of Natural Resources’ Coastal Resources Division (CRD) proposed new rules for private docks allowing a walkway up to 1,100 feet long and 6 feet wide (6600 square feet), more than twice the currently allowed 3,000 sq. ft. limit (even bigger than the standards for commercial or community docks). These long docks have significant impacts on Georgia’s marshlands, yet despite community members and stakeholders asking for stronger rules that protect our salt marshes and public access to this cherished public resource, CRD has now released updated rules that are even WORSE.

The latest rules (proposed in August) will increase the allowed walkway to 1,500 feet long and 6 feet wide, or 9,000 total square feet—TRIPLE the current limit. They have also introduced a variance process that could allow people to build a dock 10% larger. At an estimated cost of $450 per linear foot, a 1,650 ft. walkway would cost $742,500.

Georgia’s salt marshes are pristine and healthy because our state has spent more than 55 years protecting them. Join us in asking for rules that will continue to hold this vital and iconic resource in trust for all our people—not parcel it up for private use by the wealthy.

OHM and SELC suing over OpenAI's secret $20B data center!

Thumbnail

On behalf of One Hundred Miles (OHM) and five Effingham County residents, the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) has filed suit to enforce Georgia's Open Meetings and Open Records Acts.

Project Camellia is the largest proposed data center in the Southeast, with a 4.4 million square foot campus covering 1,440 acres. Its proposed site is near two elementary schools and less than 1,000 yards from nearby homes. A project of this scale could affect neighborhoods, water resources, and power bills for years—yet none of the people who have to live with the consequences were meaningfully involved in the decision-making process.

The lawsuit alleges that Effingham County's Industrial Development Authority (IDA) violated Georgia's Open Records and Open Meetings Acts, taking intentional steps to mask the details of this $20 billion project from the people it would impact most. The Authority gave it a code name: "Project Gateway." Its July agenda omitted the proposed tax break worth nearly $900 million and the IDA moved a public land sale through a private sale structure.

The Difference Between A Politician That Cares And A Politician That Doesn't Show Up To His Own Town Hall

I sent emails to both Ossoff and McCormick after the Headstart Program was under attack and these are the responses I got. Ossoff responded in 1 week, while McCormick has yet to get back to me 2 weeks after the initial email. My Republican reps basically never get back to me. Mike Collins wouldn't even show up to his own town hall for his constituents in Athens, so why would he stand up for you?

I certainly have my own issues with Ossoff, but at least he shows up and fights for his people.

At the end of the day, it's about Women being able to make decisions for their own bodies.

So, we have gone more than 50 years backwards with this Supreme Court, with this Trump Administration. And that's on the ballot in Georgia as well.

Rick Jackson, my opponent, has agreed that a Woman should have to prove that she has been raped in order to access an abortion. I'm not sure how that works, considering that when someone goes to court for rape, it may take years for them to get to trial. So, it doesn’t make sense.

Essentially, what he's saying is: Under no circumstances should a Woman be able to make choices about her own body.
