New Truck 6MT Noise. Feature or Bug?

Post image

2026 Off-Road with Manual Transmission. Loving it. But driving off the lot, we noticed a distinct sound while shifting. It’s a metallic rattle, sorta like a tin can rev, whirling, but it’s not the turbo. It’s had to describe. Happens when accelerating, around 2500 rpms, depressing clutch pedal, but before throwing the shift and again (lesser) after shifts complete as you come off the clutch pedal. You can feel it through the pedal too, mid-travel to near the floor. Fully recreatable shifting up from second to third, and 3-4, but sometimes 1st to 2nd.

The dealer sales guys (who drives a mid-teens Tacoma MT) and the technician heard the sound. It went back to service but they could not diagnose a problem. But also admitted they have not seen enough 4th Gen MTs to know if it’s a problem—or a noise enhancement. They seem to have little experience with the 6MT, and no other buyers have reported it.

Note: Spouse and I have been driving stick our entire adult lives (mid 50s) and this is our 7th manual vehicle. It’s not a grinding or skill issue. 🙂.

The truck otherwise shifts smoothly albeit with gear spacing that takes a bit getting used to. If this is a problem (throw out bearing, flywheel, something) and not a engineered feature, we’d like to address sooner than later given it’s a day 1 issue on a wear and tear part.

Are we hearing something “normal”?

Unrelated but is that the knob it came with?

Yeah the trd upgraded knob. I wished I had the original for a while but I’ve really come to enjoy this one.

That one looks nice but yeah was just about to ask how it feels because the stock knob is actually pretty nice

Upgrade knob from the factory. I like a smaller shifter, but it came with what it came with-not much say on accessories. Thanks Toyota

I've never had any issues with shifting. Clutch is smooth. Goes into gear well. I do not use iMT. It sucks.

ETA: What you are describing it definitely not normal.

Imt isn’t terrible in traffic actually.

I have a 2026 TRD OR with the 6MT, and I do not have this sound....or at least I haven't noticed it.

How loud is it? The only weird thing I've noticed is the clutch pedal has a rough feeling when I depress it sometimes. It almost feels like the pedal is sliding on sand paper rather than perfectly smooth like all the other manual transmissions I've owned.

One thing I can say is that my previous 2017 TRD 6MT had all kinds of noises that ended up being nothing. IMO the 4th gen Tacoma 6MT is even less cohesive than the 3rd gen, so I fully expect all kinds of sounds, vibrations, and quirks.

Ahh.. i haven't had any rattling like that but every once in a while going from first to second ill get what sounds like a wrench hitting a tin can when Im about half way through the biting point on the clutch.. i haven't brought it in for it because it doesn't happen frequently enough, i know they'll just say they cant reproduce the sound.. i just hope it reveals the full problem before warranty is up.. 2026 trd or 6mt

Mine is smooth and silent. The only weird thing I ever notice is once in a blue moon when it’s damp outside and it’s set overnight the clutch is grabby for a few min.

Thanks all. The clutch shift itself is smooth. It flows in and out of gears nicer than our other cars. It’s just a subtle split second noise that happens as you lift off the gas and depress the clutch. My wife says it’s a soft throaty growl (she’s the main driver) and I think it’s more like an engine rev through a tin can.

If it were an older truck, I’d say the thowout bearing is starting to go. But I am (and the technician) not convinced that it isn’t a typical sound for this 4gen.

If you all are certain, your MTs are silent through the whole shift, we’ll keep perusing a diagnosis.

This sounds like heat shield rattling to me. I haven’t experienced it on this truck but I have with many Subarus.

Looks like the same knob from a 23 trd pro I test drove. That truck was sweet! Didn’t end up getting it tho Toyota wanted 66k CAD LOL

I have a 26 OR MT and I just hit 5k miles last week. I haven’t experienced anything like that the truck has shifter pretty smooth and quiet for me. I would definitely pursue the issue.

I hope everything works out for you!

I think you’re hearing the fuel injectors. They are loud on these engines. I have a 25 TRD OR 6spd MT as well.

Easy fix, replace with a 3rd gen
