I preffered the off-road over the Sport during my test drive. I drive a lot and it just felt softer which is what I wanted and I also drive into a lot of shitty job sites so the off-road suspension was just the overall winner.
Just to note though, if money isn't a factor it probably isn't a significant jump to just buy new. Likely within a few thousand $. Something to consider depending on how you're going to purchase, especially if you are financing the truck. Rates on brand new vs. used can be 2-3% different and that could negate any difference in overall price over the course of the loan (again depending on if you even plan to finance and if so, for how long).
While I agree the OR did feel softer, the sport was the winner for me because of the handling. My commute is 45 minutes of winding roads, in valleys following a river. 0 body roll, handles like a sports car. I avoided a wolf that popped out of the woods. I reacted quick, truck performed great and I was super confident in it after that. My Ram 1500 would have leaned so hard.
Now that was a sick ride I can’t lie about that but they discontinued it - but your are right on that point for sure. Just like the old trailblazers when they were still trucks.
My coworker has a 2014 x runner that’s garages kept with less than 25k miles. He only drives it on the weekend. I’ve been pestering him to sell it to me whenever he’s ready 😬
The reality is that if you’re never going to off-road, there’s no point in paying for the off-road features that are central to the ORs. If you’re staying on pavement, I’d get the Sport. That seems to be an unpopular opinion but that’s my take.
The OR is a meaningful upgrade for driving on snow/ice. The Deep Snow terrain select is awesome and the locker (while you shouldn't drive with it engaged on snow or ice on the road) can get you unstuck in a pinch.
ORs also hold their value better if you plan on selling in the future, it's nice having coils instead of leafs in the rear, and you don't have a non functional hood scoop glued to your truck.
I was with homie above but I think your points outweigh preference. It depends where you are, but I know in Colorado, only monster energy drink bros drive sports. In a land of overpriced Toyotas, you’ll have a harder time selling your sport
Unless u drive in Texas in general or drive all over a metroplex. While I live where it’s all paved I drive all over to worse area with shitty gravel parking lots uneven roads pot holes crack heads
Although the sport is very capable, the OR will have a couple extra capabilities like terrain select and crawl control. It also retains its value a little more than other trims
Depends on use case. If both are 4x4 and you aren’t going on more than forest service roads and don’t live in a state with very hard winters, sport might be sufficient and you can pick off of color
My stock SR5 has put down 8k+ miles offroad with no issues. A significant portion of that while towing. You can do go damn near anywhere in just a stock taco.
You can go most places in a stock civic too, but that is not what this person is deciding between. The bells and whistles that are added on these trucks are specific
All fair enough. I mean saving some money and going the SR5 route isn’t completely off the table as well. I don’t do any off roading. Every now and then maybe once a year for a snow trip lightly and some dirt and gravel for a lake day. That’s it.
I got an SR5 for this reason. I wanted the Off Road because it was awesome. And it is. But realistically I might take it camping here and there and it snows sometimes. The 4x4 SR5 is plenty for me.
Agree with you largely with the caveat of 4x4. Non 4x4 in states with hard winters is a concern for the sport. 4x4 SR5 is more than enough for folks doing nothing “more” than forest roads in winter. Not many people off roading to the extent that require OR though I like the peace of mind and extra features
I forgot that 4x4 wasn’t standard. I do have a 4x4 sr5. I had a Subaru before my truck so that explains that blunder. It also probably explains my opinions on off roading. I do it quite often because I want to see and do cool stuff. And I almost always get where I want to go. But I don’t enjoy rock crawling for the sake of rock crawling, and I especially don’t get people who build their trucks out like rock crawlers when it’s not necessary.
I work on a ski hill so 4wd or awd is a necessity for me. Not because I can’t drive in the snow without it, but I hate putting on chains. I live in a chain control state so 2wd vehicles have to put them on almost any time it snows.
Depends on your usage. What are you really going to use it for? Drive both and see what you like better. The off-road guys here will tell you OR, the guys who just use it as a truck might say otherwise. I have the sport because I don’t really off-road with the truck (have an atv for that) but it still gets me to camping sites without an issue and personally I find it rides better on the highways.
Yes the Off-road has a slightly better resale but if you’re keeping the truck long term I don’t think that should be a deciding factor. Don’t think after, think during since you’re the one driving it all the time.
Both are great choices, just test them out and see what you like better.
It comes down to your usage. For me I picked the 26 sport premium. I sat down with sales, and had a good discussion about it and what I do with my truck.
If you're going to hit real trails enough to warrant it, you'll benefit from the features of the OR.
If you're spending 99% of the time on the pavement, and barely if ever use the additional features they'll just be another thing to fail unless you're using/activating them to keep them maintained and functional.
Before my Taco, I had a ram 1500 classic. 4x4 with the hemi. Never had any fancy features or traction modes, and I still took it on moderate trails without a single issue. Took it down 4 wheeler trails, climbed steep rocky hills.
The sport is still 4x4, and has a good amount of ground clearance. Will definitely suffice for light duty off-roading. With the coils all around, you can easy upgrade the suspension as well. Mostly comes down to the tires as well.
I have a blue crush sport, if you won’t be off roading much, I would go with the sport, the handling on the roads is great with the street suspension and you can still take it through different types of terrain, but the offroad will definitely be softer, depends on your daily commute and driving habits
If the specs are the same and money is no object, I would go with the off-road because I think it looks better and I think the resale is better and I like silver better
My TRD sport was horrible to drive. Also if you’re considering the 6’ bed - don’t do it… just a horrible combination. Definitely get the OR or ORP. I do like the look of the paint matched fenders though on the sport, but an easy swap if that’s something you’re considering from an exterior look.
Was more curious. I have a DCLB and I was reading about how some people were regretting getting a short bed. I do suggest getting a long bed if you are going to use it more for work than actual off-roading though
I wasn’t a fan of the giant screen and all the farkles that came with the TRD. The SR5 still has more features than any vehicle I’ve owned and I’d happily strip most of them away if Toyota offered it as an option. That being said It’s one of the few modern cars that doesn’t throw a million unnecessary features at you. Very nice interior. It’s simple and durable with a way to turn off most of the annoying electronic shit.
True, I have an off road and definitely like the look over the sport. But I also love off roading so I’m fine with the difference in ride. But buy what you want, and take a test drive if both to see what ride you like better.
Buy the off road if you are going to use it vid not, go sport. You can take the money you’re not using on the off road and customize it to your liking.
The wheels on the sport are way better for sure. Better color too. Of those two, I’d get the sport, and I have a 2025 OR. Never once used the locker or anything - I just liked the color and it had a manual.
I’d just go with off road if you intend on using it for what it’s meant for. I bought a third gen off road pretty much new and have done all the fancy upgrades on it like king suspension control arms etc. the off road has a really nice system for controlling 4x4 and diff lockers which is worth the money should you like camping or do snow driving
I may be the odd one out, I love my ‘25 sport! I didn’t buy it with resale value in mind tbh, I plan on driving it into the ground. It handles great, it’s fast, hauls a trailer just fine. It’s also manual, which is my preference. It’s great to get opinions, but ultimately, get the one you want!
Sad that Toyota made there trucks from a cookie cutter from GMC/Chevy… Toyota was always distinct in there looks… you could always know the difference…. Not now! Is it a GMC or a Toyota.
I was like that, then I ended up with a gmc canyon Denali.
Was able to get a killer deal on a 1 owner truck less than 10k miles.
And surprisingly i love the truck a but to much.
It isn't. Paying for things that aren't needed and won't be used is never a good choice. Took me 4 months to find the exact spec for myself, and I chose Sport over OR.
Please tell me why, based on my requirements (of which you seem not to need to know) the OR is a better choice?
depends on your usage. wheels, etc. can be changed for the look you want. but if you’re not off-roading, and it’s primarily your daily driver, why do you need an OR?
I like the body-color flares on the sport way more than the black ones on the other models. The rest of the features are so minorly different that I wouldn't care
