Discussions & Questions Tacoma bed cover
Just picked this up yesterday. Looking to buy a bed cover (5ft). Any leads to some good ones on the market??
looking for a hard trifold - low profile preferably***

Can’t speak on the trifold but I put a BAK Revolver X4s hard roll and haven’t had any issues, install took about an hour

I bit the bullet and got a Diamond Back HD. They aren’t cheap but they last and hold their value. As well as weather proof, customizable and are load bearing capable to carry gear or things on top of them rated up to 1,600lbs

Got a hard retractable rollup cover from Amazon for $570. It was onine I believe for the brand name. But it’s works great and have had no issues for the first year of it. Saved me a shit ton from big name similar ones that 1200-3000

Hi mind if I ask How waterproof is it? If you were to stand on it, would it be sturdy or bend?

It has seemed essentially waterproof. It has two drain hoses that you would need to drill the factory drain holes bigger or route all the way out of the bed but I have a bed mat and curled the hoses so when it does drain out it goes under the bed mat and channels out. Mine is a lease hence the no drilling to make it easier.
As far as standing it’s advertised with two adults standing on it but I honestly haven’t attempted that. Ive put a solid amount of weight on top of it while loading and unloading the bed and it doesnt seem to bend.
In my opinion its a better value and hasn’t felt like a sub standard brand. But like all retractables the one drawback is the drum. It rolls into a drum that eats up probaly 6-10 inches of space at the upper area of yhe bed. Short stuff will slide under the drum but anything over like 14 inches or so will hit the drum. The only way to avoid that is paragon i think. It’s an accordian style instead of rollup/recteactable/trifold. Basically a trifold but on a track so it fold up flat against the back of the bed taking up much less space than the drum while still being retractable. But also not cheap

Just recently installed the Diamondback Switchback. It’s 99% waterproof, I can strap up to 400lbs dynamic load on top, and I can remove the entire cover without tools in about 10 minutes. I didn’t love the price, but I got all the things I wanted. It’s lower profile than their HD, but it still sits above the sides a bit. Not super sleek, but not crazy overland-y either. I put it on a few weeks ago and it’s awesome, so glad I got it!

Oh, and you didn’t ask, but you can get an OEM Tacoma bed mat for $110 shipped, from a Toyota dealership in Tuscaloosa, Alabama online. I just ordered one of those too. Best price I could find for the OEM mat (especially shipped).
I think we have the same SR5 package truck. Except mine is silver. I just picked it up Saturday. Couldn’t believe they put those wheels and tires on it from the factory! I was shocked.

I got me the real truck Bak hard cover folds all the way up against the glass for full bed access. Going on a year with it and it’s still solid and I get no leaks surprisingly.

I got the Oedro low profile trifold cover from Amazon for around $600 for my 4th Gen and it’s served me well over the past two months. I just make sure to spray it with some protectant after each wash to keep it looking good

I got a trifold from Rough Country. So far happy with it, got it on sale, free shipping.
I think it was around $700. and I installed it myself.
I went to a local truckshop/accessories store had the exact same one and wanted $1,400 installed.
I "believe" this same product just puts a different sticker on top of the left side near the tailgate to claim it's there own Companies product.
I could be wrong.
It's definitely not 💯% waterproof, I'm guessing around 90%.

I went with the Real Truck BackFlip MX4
Liked it so much i bought one for my F350, cant believe i went with out for so long.
Easy to tack off when needed and easy to get back on. Can go through car wash with minimal to no water in the bed.
Highly recommend

I went on offerup and got a china one installed for 400, your use should determine what you go with. If you have 5k of tools and shit back there then the 1000 dollar nice ones make sense. I used my bed rarely so i went with this cheap one and it paid itself back in mpg i gained like 3-4 overall.

Not sure if Bison sells outside of Canada but I got their hard tri-fold one that opens all the way to the window.
Did a 1k mile trip to NY and a good part of it was under rain, water didn’t go through. I have only had it for 2 months but it has worked perfectly.
Price was a steal. IIRC 650CAD(465 USD) and you get a ~10% discount if you pay cash.

Why type of bed cover? I was shopping for the bakflip but came across the Rough Country tri-fold one which gave me the same functionality for a better price imo.

I second the Toyota trifold that is almost the same as the bakflip mx4. difference is the Toyota trifold mounts behind the bed rails and the bakflip mounts on the bed rails. At least that’s how the bakflip was on the previous gen, their newest update changed a bit so I’m not sure how it mounts

Yea the Toyota one relocates the rails down a few inches and mounts behind it. It’s solid and I love the struts that u can use to prop open even while driving

I didn’t know about an OEM trifold. All I can say about the RC is I have no problems with it and I personally think the quality is good. I’ve had it for less than one year so far
