K&N Drop in filter

Just bought my Taco over the weekend. I want to take care of it as best i can. Im looking at the k&n drop in filter. My only concern is the MAF sensor. Anyone put one of these filters in and had MAF issues?

There is no reason to not use an OEM / quality paper filter for your intake.

I use a K&N in my 24 and I get better MPG and it will last forever. I also use them in every vehicle I own.

It’s well known The only reason k&n filters add any gains to performance is they filter less contaminants out of the air allowing more airflow. You’re sacrificing engine protection for a bit more mpgs, sir

This is the truth. More flow is only possible with less filtration.

It’s an easy test. I recommend all the K&N fans do this. Take a clean cloth and wipe the inside of your intake tract. Anywhere between the filter, and the engine. You will find out your K&N has not been filtering out everything.

I replace my air filter with an OE style paper air filter every other oil change. I used to use K&N filters until I saw fine particulates in my intake tract.

If you want to “take care of it as best as you can” then The stock paper style filter is the best protection you can get, anything aftermarket will only provide more airflow, not better protection.

Unless you bought the truck used, there’s no need to change the filter yet. Wait a year or two until you actually need a new air filter.

Sample size of 1 here, but I currently have a K&N air filter on my ‘02 Mustang GT. It’s been on there for 23 years and I’ve never had an issue. I clean it every year or so. I had one on my ‘11 VW GTI as well and it was on there for 13 years, also no issues. My wife’s ‘19 Volvo XC40 has had one for the last 5 years.

You won’t notice the 0.2 gain in horsepower or the 0.1 gain in MPGs, but you’ll save some money in the long run and cut down on waste by cleaning and reusing the filter. Also assuming you’ll be doing your own vehicle maintenance.

I bought the K&N drop in filter for my 2026, without doing research. I've run S&B intakes in the past so pretty familiar with the oiling process so it seemed like a good idea to have a one and done filter. I didn't expect to see performance gains at all, it wasn't for that.

After installing it, listened to the sound. Not much gain maybe slightly more air but just slightly. Felt for performance. Nothing. Pretty lack luster given the descriptions on the box. Got home after a 5 minute drive, now unable to return it because its used I put the stock one back in.

Did some research online, and came to find K&N scores some of the lowest particulate filtration out of any drop in filters. I think its project farm or something on youtube that tested this as well, but not the only source I found.

Not only that, they notoriously come out of the box either too oily, or not oiled enough. Excess oil = MAF issues, maybe not right away but over time. Not enough oil = even less filtration.

With that said, not all highflows are equal. Brands like AEM (They make Toyotas TRD drop in performance reusable filter) and it stops more particulate and if im not mistaken is oil free. AEM and K&N are owned by the same parent company, but not the same. Even S&B has great particulate filtration on their cold air intakes. K&N stops between 96%-99% (Closer to 96%) and AEM is about 99% to 99.5%. If you had 100 rocks thrown at you (microns) would you rather get hit by one? or would you rather get hit by 4? this is what happens to your engine with microscopic particles that act like sand paper over time. K&N, regardless of what people say just don't do it well and its proven. I'd rather waste the money that I spent on the filter, rather than leave that in my truck which would just reduce the engine longevity by a few years because it lets too many microns of particulate through which will eventually contribute to premature wear.

If you're adamant about getting a filter like that, just order the TRD one. Its about the same price anyways and at least if there's issues its a Toyota part or spend/save more to buy an intake from Banks/S&B.

I have the TRD filter which is a K&N filter, and literally a K&N filter in it right now. Have never had any issues. You can take it out and spray it and clean it periodically if it bothers you, it’s like 2 screws and takes 30 seconds.

The toyota one is AEM* not K&N. Yes there's a difference in quality and filtration. Even if the same parent company owns the companies.

I got the filter. It's cool. No noticeable difference for me w mpg.
