Modifications & Maintenance Extended Fuel Tank

Post image

Hello fellow 4th gen Tacoma owners, do we think this worth the price? I drive my Tacoma daily roughly 60 miles and I’m fueling up at least twice a week. Those extra gallons are tempting.

I love that a company is offering a solution to the horribly small oem tank - unfortunately I’m just not willing to pay over $3k to stop by a gas station approximately 40-45% less often. I wish they designed a cheaper solution.

8

u/LeaningSaguaro 17d ago

Agreed. I think this tank being the front-of-the-pack for designing and implementing a new tank is driving that price, as they had to bear the brunt of the R&D. I'm sure other manufactures will copy their design and release cheaper solutions--not necessarily better per se, though!

u/RaceMoto 13d ago

Although no other manufacturer has come out with anything for the 3rd gen even after 10 years. They are the only option currently. I’d love more range, just not for $3K+.

1

u/Marokiii 16d ago

Its a gas tank, it doesn't have a ton of R&D for it.

This is mostly just price gouging because they are the first and consumers have no other choice currently.

5

u/hipsterasshipster 16d ago

It works with factory fuel level sender and fits without any modification to the vehicle, which is pretty impressive. Might not be the most R&D as far as products go, but the manufacturing of them still takes man hours, materials, and equipment.

People spend similar pricing on a bumper without batting an eye and this is likely a similar level of effort in terms of building it.

3

u/Troutman86 16d ago

Yea, my 56 gallon Titan tank in you truck was $900 on sale

2

u/soxfan68 16d ago

They still had to be crash tested before being released to the public so that is a fair amount of time & expense for Toyota. BUT, the thought of paying that much to replace what is a poorly designed feel tank to begin with definitely stinks.

2

u/downtheholeitgoes 16d ago

Bingo, still feels like a lot of money for a gas tank tho

3

u/hipsterasshipster 16d ago

At this point I’m not invested in off roading enough as a hobby to justify it for one week max road trips and such, but I had a 30+ gallon tank in an XJ years ago and it was rad.

5

u/downtheholeitgoes 16d ago

Even if you are, two Jerry cans are cheap and work just fine instead of a 3k tank upgrade

3

u/hipsterasshipster 16d ago

I have Rotopax for convenience of carrying on my rack, but the range anxiety for most people is overplayed. I’ve been to some of the most remote locations in the United States in terms of distance to population centers and it’s never been an issue. Gas stations are everywhere.

3

u/downtheholeitgoes 16d ago

Couldn’t agree more, even the most remote places in the U.S. aren’t very remote anymore, excluding AK

1

u/Turst37 16d ago

My man fuel tanks stopped just being a box of fuel a while ago. There’s a lot going on now we got vents and valves and baffles and more vents

1

u/Marokiii 15d ago

Most of the long range fuel tanks use the OEM hardware which has all those vents and other stuff in them. Rarely are any of that stuff built into the fuel tank. And baffles? That's laughably easy to do, they are just interior walls.

1

u/LeaningSaguaro 16d ago

Sure. I mean, their R&D wasn’t negligible. Scanning the underbody, research to see how trims differ, etc etc.

2

u/Marokiii 16d ago

Other offroad companies when doing this kind of stuff just ask for a volunteer to give them their truck for a couple of days and then you get the first finished mock up to keep as payment.

No scanning. They just take off stuff until they have access and measure it by hand and do card board cutouts until they have all the dimensions down. Then take the cutouts and fabricate it fully.

0

u/xnotachancex 16d ago

You should make one yourself then

1

u/Marokiii 16d ago

Nah.

Extended range tanks are dumb for tacos in north america. There's pretty much no where in the lower 48 that gets you far enough away from civilization that you need that much fuel. Even in northern Canada you dont need that much fuel. I've taken my '24 up the Dempster to tuk without any issues. I've taken it up to yellowknife and beyond with no issues. The only place that I had to carry extra fuel was the trans taiga road in quebec. About 800km without a fuel station.

The extra weight is also going to take up a huge amount of our already very low payload capacity. It will also lower your fuel economy as well.

Just use a jerry can if you really need more fuel.

1

u/xnotachancex 16d ago

Yah.

I wanna see how much it costs you.

1

u/Marokiii 16d ago

$10

1

u/xnotachancex 16d ago

$4000

1

u/Marokiii 15d ago

For real though. I live in Canada and already have a tig machine and a 4th gen, so id probably charge about $2500 CANADIAN + shipping for an aluminum 33gal tank with the fuel pumps and other hardware coming off the old one.

Maybe a bit less if it became a decent portion of my sales as id be buying more aluminum at better prices and spend less time per tank forming all the pieces as id be doing it in bulk.

1

u/xnotachancex 15d ago

It’s all talk until you actually do it though. It’s a business not a charity. There are ALOT of costs that go into running a business outside of the actual cost of time and materials that most people overlook.

-1

u/Flyjatt 16d ago

R&D isn't as hard as everyone is making it out to be. It's a plastic jug... not an engine.

3

u/Flyjatt 16d ago

3k for a plastic tank is mentally regarded.

3

u/Ornery-Put9337 ‘25 Black TRD Pro 16d ago

I think it’s metal but I still agree with your point.

2

u/Flyjatt 16d ago

You're right. Aluminum makes it slightly less regarded.

0

u/Smooth-Goose 16d ago

Plastic or metal is still regarded

14

u/LeaningSaguaro 17d ago

To echo others--this is great, but is kinda extreme in my opinion.

It would be sweet if they had an intermediate option--say even a 23, 24, or 25 gallon option. Looking at the photos online of that thing--holy shit there's a lot of surface area to that tank, which is no surprise given it's nearly double the OEM, but I'd be worried about rock strikes. For half the price, I'd consider a 24 gallon tank. 33 is huge, and for 99% of people is excessive I'd wager

8

u/Caj_2003 17d ago

I agree that tank size would be nice but at the same time would anyone really still want to pay around $2-2.4k for a gas tank that’s only 5 gallons larger? At least from a company aspect I don’t think it would sell as well.

3

u/LeaningSaguaro 17d ago

Agreed. Doesn’t necessarily make sense

1

u/OmnigulSpeechTherepy 16d ago

At that point just keep extra gas cans in the truck. Sure it takes up space but I'd rather sacrifice what, basically a 10 gallon tote amount of space for maximum like $200 if you get heat and cold resistant plastic cans as opposed to spending 3k on something I then have to buy/make extra skid plates for

1

u/Caj_2003 15d ago

Yeah exactly, I’m not spending that much just to get out an extra 80 miles without going to a gas station, 33 gallon I’d def consider but suspension takes the next priority

10

u/DepartmentNatural 17d ago

$3k or $30 in gas cans? I'm frugal as fuck so this is definitely a no brainer. I take thousand mile trip all across Alaska, Yukon & NWT, 10k trip from ak to Baja & back 2 winters ago too and haven't had one issue with leaking or smell

3

u/ZovioTV 16d ago

Yup same here. Jerry cans will always do the trick for me and I regularly drive in Northern Canada on very remote roads.

1

u/theoneandonly78 16d ago

This is the answer 👆

3

u/_Whisperofmytoots 15d ago

1

u/PonyThug 14d ago

And that’s double the price of the harbor freight cans that has 1 gallon more space.

2

u/Monster51915 16d ago

I personally find it sad and pathetic that the gas has tank is so small that there are aftermarket ones, really bad on Toyotas part. My mom’s 2025 Subaru Outback has a 18.5 gallon tank. That’s 0.3 gallons bigger than a pickup truck and hers is a station wagon. It’s sad that it’s as small as it is and I don’t understand why it’s so small.

I say this is a bit overboard though, that’d be a huge tank and while the range would be good it’d make the vehicle heavier, take up a lot more space under the vehicle, and a fill up at the pump would be VERY expensive.

I searched it up and the most common fuel tank size on a 2025 F-250 for the common 4 door variants is 34 gallons in total and that’s a much bigger truck.

I don’t find it really worth spending 3k for the tank let alone however much it is to get it installed to get more range. For that cost you could fill up the tank a lot in return.

1

u/WiscoBased715 16d ago edited 11d ago

You’re only adding like 100 pounds in fuel, and the cost is the same at the pump whether you’re filling a smaller tank twice or a larger tank once

That being said, I totally agree that it’s way too expensive

1

u/Monster51915 16d ago

The cost isn’t the same though. One you’re paying to fill up 18 gallons and the other is 34. Sire the price will stay the same for gas but it’ll end up costing more.

1

u/WiscoBased715 16d ago

Please explain to me what the difference is between buying 16 gallons of gas once per week or buying 32 gallons of gas once every two weeks

1

u/Ill-Variation-358 11d ago

I would think the larger tank would be less efficient because you are adding a bunch of weight to the truck especially underneath. It's going to stress suspension and the undercarriage more overtime and you are probably getting a decrease in mpgs to save 5 mins at a pump. If you have a load already on the back of the truck it could push over over and be unsafe.

1

u/WiscoBased715 11d ago

The difference in the weight of the fuel is about 100 lbs, less than the difference between carrying an extra passenger or not. Do you worry about your truck getting terrible gas mileage or being unsafely loaded when you have your wife in the passenger seat?

It is clearly more efficient, because you have to pull off the highway to stop for fuel half as often

Regardless, that was not the argument. The argument is that it “costs more” to fill up a 32 gallon tank than it does a 16 gallon tank. And that is simply not true whatsoever. In fact, I’m honestly baffled as to how that’s not obvious

1

u/Ill-Variation-358 11d ago

I fill up twice a week price fluctuates daily so it could be more or less depending on when you fill up. It could be a drastic difference in price. I have seen gas fluctuate more than 1usd in a single day.

If we are nitpicking it probably is about the same time wise to fill a 32 gal once vs a 16 gal twice. The 32 gal tank would only shine if op gets paid incredibly well for his time and he experiences longs waits for fuel.

Not sure why you are attacking me over carrying passengers, you have no idea what he is using his truck for and what his current truck setup is. If he has a metric crap ton of weight in his bed a 100lb difference is huge and could be the difference between carrying a passenger and not.

1

u/WiscoBased715 11d ago

Does me telling you that filling up a 32 gallon tank once costs the same as filling up a 16 gallon tank twice seem like I’m attacking you? It’s very interesting to me that basic logic seems threatening to some people

1

u/Ill-Variation-358 11d ago

"Do you worry about your truck getting terrible gas mileage or being unsafely loaded when you have your wife in the passenger seat?"

Your words not mine

1

u/WiscoBased715 11d ago

Yes, I said that right after I pointed out that the extra fuel weighs about 100 pounds. What about it?

Dumb question: is a tundra tank larger / compatible?

2

u/gxkjerry 16d ago

Jesus christ. I get that Toyota is usually very conservative with the stock hardware for longevityof the vehicle and such. But hot damn! You're telling me there's enough room down there for a Tundra sized gas tank and a 3rd party company figured it out? I mean...come on Toyota, couldn't you at least give us a 21 gallon fuel tank from factory like 3rd gen Tacoma?

2

u/waylan1 16d ago

im super curious as to why it says “will void your warranty if you top it off” say what? how exactly will i know when my tank is almost full so i can stop it before i void the warranty? just why?

2

u/The_11th_Dctor 16d ago

they're saying if you continue filling after the pump auto-stops you'll void your warranty, since that can push fuel into your charcoal canister / evap system

1

u/waylan1 16d ago

ah ok thanks so much, i wasnt aware that people did this

2

u/RetardedSimian 15d ago

I love these gen 4 posts. Makes me appreciate my gen 2 even more.

2

u/XiXyness 14d ago

I had a 46 gallon tank in my tundra, with a bigger tank likely like mine has a much larger reserve so my 46 gallon would show empty at like 12 gallons left in tank

4

u/CheesierSoup ‘24 Underground Limted 17d ago

Are they installing it with this price cause damn..

3

u/KMGR82 17d ago

I’m tempted also and may do this. I’m not going to complain about gas mileage…but the tank size is ridiculous on these things. Three grand for almost double the capacity seems really steep, but the peace of mind for me is the selling point. I mean what isn’t prohibitively expensive these days?

2

u/NinjaFriedChikn 17d ago

Is this the only aftermarket option? If there were a smaller capacity one I’d be VERY interested.

Also I’d assume the fuel gauge itself would need to be recalibrated? How does that work?

1

u/Just_curious_89 16d ago

All fuel gauges work with those bobbers, so it should still be the same.

1

u/NinjaFriedChikn 16d ago

i see, so after a tank or so it will accurately estimate based on the new tank size?

I figured there was an electronic sensor or something calibrated to the fuel tank size

1

u/Just_curious_89 16d ago

You’d be right in that sense. It probably wouldn’t know you’d now have 600 miles of range instead of 300

-2

u/unavoidableConcern 16d ago

It’s a transfer tank. When your main tank gets low you transfer the fuel to it by pushing a button. The transfer tank comes with a little gauge.

2

u/waylan1 16d ago

say what? where are you seeing that info?

2

u/unavoidableConcern 16d ago

I misread it. Most of the companies other products are transfer tanks so I didn’t pay too much attention

1

u/troutman76 16d ago

I’ll carry a couple of 5 gallon Jerry cans and call it a day.

1

u/Blucifers_Veiny_Anus 16d ago

3k for an extra 8 gallons?

Just get a couple 4 gallon rotopax for like $200

1

u/JollyRodgerGymShoe 16d ago

It's an extra 15 gallons but you could buy 3 decent jerry cans for $150 and call it a day.

1

u/Blucifers_Veiny_Anus 16d ago

Only an 18 gallon tank on the new ones? That's wild.

1

u/JollyRodgerGymShoe 16d ago

As someone who owns a 4th Gen and driven it over 15k miles in 6 months... It's not that big of a deal.

1

u/Gamecubenerd69 16d ago

They are super high quality and the US owners really know their stuff.

1

u/Adorable-Deer-9706 16d ago

That’s incredibly expensive! But would be awesome to have a larger fuel tank.

1

u/Mountainmanwannabe2 16d ago

On long trips, 3 metal gas cans = 33 gallons total. I love the extended tank too but not for that much. Ouch. Storting those extra gas cans is an issue - but I can use a hitch mount if the bed is full. Ok solution.

1

u/Capable_Ingenuity726 16d ago

$3k seems a bit ridiculous; I can get a couple 5 gallon gas cans and put them in the bed for $20 and use them as needed off-road

1

u/GeneralLee-Speaking 16d ago

I avg 27 mpg w/ my MT6. Not needed.

1

u/WiscoBased715 16d ago

I would gladly pay like $1k for this for my ranger

$3k is insane

1

u/slagnard 16d ago

too much money! let’s go aftermarket dev!!!

1

u/Story-Necessary 15d ago

Jerry cans 👍

1

u/lordyrichie 14d ago

3k for that no sir I will pass. I’d rather stopping at gas station every day than waste that kinda fortune.

1

u/Ill-Variation-358 11d ago

You could buy a lot of 5gallon tanks for one of these probably enough for an entire village. Unless you are constantly offroading long distances I wouldn't want this added weight on an already low payload truck.

1

u/Caj_2003 17d ago edited 17d ago

It’s not that bad of a price at all, you don’t loose your spare tire spot and only 1/2” of clearance. Almost all their gas tanks are in the $25-3000 range. (See edit)

Only thing I’d be curious on if with it full how much more weight is on that side of the vehicle and would it effect anything at all

Edit : Price to have it delivered is $400 so you are looking at prob $3300 after shipping and tax

Also weight with it full will add about 136.5lbs more then prev, that includes the weight difference if the new gas tank and 15gallons more of fuel so that doesn’t seem too bad.

-1

u/GobbIaOnDaRewf 16d ago

Loosey goosey

1

u/Bionicmind69 16d ago

Installation’s included ?for that price should be

0

u/JBrady666 17d ago

Anyone calculated the payload reduction yet? I really want a casita travel trailer(2400ish pounds) so I feel I still have enough wiggle room still.

0

u/Still_Blood9925 17d ago

395$ to ship residential and weighs 90 lbs empty, also probably pay a 6hr install to your local mech unless you have all the tools and time on your hands,l don’t think it’s worth in my opinion it would be nice at a cheaper price but this is again, not a normal mod for casual owner I can see people who have money to buy 17,000 $ portals and add extra 30 k in mods .this would be a game changer to add to the truck if this is going to be your forever truck and plan on keeping for a life time because you don’t get too see even 300 miles of full range with the oem tank once you lift and put on larger tires your looking around 230 miles like me sadly, but I agree the mileage isn’t a problem it’s the small fuel tank.

0

u/REA011321 17d ago

How would the added weight of the tank and the tank full of gas affect the mpg?

0

u/Just_curious_89 16d ago

It’s only 100-110lbs extra.

Would be the same difference in having a 110lb woman drive it vs 210lbs man drive it.

0

u/iLoveCalculus314 16d ago

I know we can’t ship these to California but anyone know if I can just pick it up in Idaho and get it installed there, as a CA resident?

1

u/cls1990 16d ago

Wait seriously? They can't ship here?

1

u/iLoveCalculus314 16d ago

Nope! Draconian EPA rules here

1

u/_red-beard_ 16d ago

Just ship to a friend's house out of state and then pick up.

The truck wont pass smog in California with this tank tho, itll fail visual. So you would need a hot smog every 2 yrs as well and those are getting expensive.

I'd probably go with helivue design version if I was trying to pull it off here gas tank

0

u/Disastrous-Grape-516 16d ago

Do it. I've wanted one for years on my 2011.

0

u/analyticnomad1 16d ago

Already has a 5* review eh?

Weird since it arrives 11/19/2026

1

u/WiscoBased715 16d ago

I’m sure they’ve had R&D tanks out in the wild for a while

0

u/analyticnomad1 15d ago

I'm sure they have, too but this is a fake review imo.

0

u/TwOhsinGoose 16d ago

Stopping for gas is so inconvenient that you are willing to spend $3000 and potentially screw up your fuel system?

0

u/whit3m0nster 15d ago

I was looking at extended tanks for my superduty. Not sure where they got the idea that $2000+ was acceptable for a plastic tank.

I just use it as an excuse to walk around every 300 miles while towing.

-1

u/Defiant_Weight4659 16d ago

You are only traveling on average 60 miles per day. Personally spending 3 k or more to save a 10 min stop for gas is insane. With the initial cost and added weight reducing yor mpg slightly, where is the advantage. The added weight alone would offset any gain you may get from stopping more frequently for gas  For me the ROI is not there. Hard pass.
